"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I managed to complete the update tonight after suffering the 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 error for the past few weeks.

    I have a new Dell Inspiron 15R in which I updated the HDD in to a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB SSHD (ST500LM000). The 8.1 upgrade constantly failed with the above error whenever I attempted it, despite safe boots, all (Windows) updates applied, all drivers up to date, etc. It seems that the SSHD drive had a firmware update published in early October 2013. After flashing the firmware update I attempted the 8.1 upgrade again and it completed without incident.

    However, thanks for the tutorial on recreating System Reserved. I now have it and it will probably be useful some day. Sorry for off-topic, but what else do I need to do to make Reset and Refresh options function without external installation media?

    Thanks for your comprehensive solution to the problem.  It was too time consuming & complicated for me so I went to the Apple Store on Thursday & bought an Apple MacBook Pro to go with my iphone & ipad, so I am now a happy man.  Pity about Microsoft's amateur performance losing once loyal customers

    Hi,

    Unfortunately I have the system reserved partition (350Mb) and am still having the same problem. I have done everything that has been suggested by all those having the same or similar problems even to completely rebuilding my laptop, ensuring all drivers and Windows 8 updates installed and that I do not have any corrupted system files. I have not installed any other software be it Microsoft or Third Party on my laptop so that my Windows 8 installation is truly clean.

    Having read the majority of threads on this and similar problems with Windows 8.1 I perceive that Microsoft has really screwed up on this update hence I think the onus is on them to analyse all the problems/issues and come up with a plan to resolve these problems/issues.  I understand from the threads of those that have eventually managed to install the update that they are still finding problems/issues.

    As a Microsoft customer I want the Windows 8.1 update withdrawn until all reported installation problems/issues have been resolved.  I would also be expecting an apology from Microsoft for the poor quality of this update - but I'm not holding my breath on that!
