"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I have tried the .iso way, but nothing works.. I cant even do a Reset or Refresh of Windows 8 without it crashing.. Even tried using automatic repair from my Windows 64bit PRO dvd, still crashing..

    I have a RBP 17" 2013. I had the same problem. Go to razerzone.com , support, systems, rbp 2013, software & drivers, "Windows 8.1 Upgrade Guides", download.

    These instructions worked for me. There has since been an update to the NVIDIA driver, which has been working fine for me. Until this came out, when I would try to update the NVIDIA driver (second week of oct) I would get BSOD. Everything seems to be working fine now. And there is an SBUI update that fixed a few issues I was having with that. Good luck!

    I'm having this same problem with my custom Rain Computers desktop computer with dual ATI V7800. I've tried 3 times with all the updates that even windows didn't find, still bsod. I'm about to try again with based on this guy's suggestion:

    "I fixed it with these things:

    1. Uninstalling DAEMON Tools, TuneUp
    2. via CMD (as admin) -> DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    3. Disabling Intel LAN, Azalia Audio, USB 3.0 via BIOS"

    After my insane adventure, it turned out to not be worth it (be careful what you wish for). Every time a driver updated, the system would crash with "Driver Violation" and the PC would reboot infinitely until I booted into safe mode (one of these drivers was for the MICROSOFT sidewinder, believe it or not). The gaming performance was beyond ****, some of them wouldn't even install correctly, and some of them wouldn't even start.

    For my gaming PC, I'm back on Windows 8... 8.1 will have to wait until MS gets their act together.

    Finally was able to get 8.1 installed.

    I tried everything I could to troubleshoot this and eventually got Microsoft supports team involved.  I did not have the Steelseries drivers installed, yet I had traces of it within my Windows registry.  Unfortunately removing all traces of Steelseries did not fix the update issue.

    So, instead of spending any more time trying to figure out what driver was causing my issues, we decided to use the ISO 8.1 method to try updating.  We selected option two during the install which only saves personal data and leaves you with a fresh Windows install.

    This may have been extreme but the update did work and I'm activated.

    I suggest others go this method if they have tried all they can to update to 8.1

    Where can we get the ISO 8.1 method? Is it possible in French? Thanks.

    Once the ISO file has been downloaded, when you run it you'll have to use the generic Windows key to start the 8.1 install.  Then, once 8.1 is installed you can activate Windows 8.1 with your 8.0 key.
