"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

I'm dealing with the same update fail. I made sure that Windows 8 had all current updates, unplugged all devices, and I updated all my device drivers to the latest. None of this made a difference, except to enrage me. I'm done with Microsoft, goodbye Windows!

FIXED! - I've actually fixed this problem when I came across an article saying it had something to do with the Steelseries Engine. So if you own any steelseries products like Mouse/Keyboard, you need to uninstall the steel series engine and then the update will work.

I've tried everything and this was the only thing that worked for me. I didn't even bother with disconnecting anything attached to my system or disabling anti virus. The culprit was Steelseries Engine.

I'll be posting this around hoping this will help everyone.

I finally successfully updated to 8.1 after >10 tries.

    My case 0x40017 error everytime

windows 8 laptop, MSI GT70 with NVIDIA 680M and intel HD 4000, bigfoot killer GigE network

I tried all the suggestions I can find on the web, update graphic cards to the newest, remove the cards before install and without reboot, disable device, disable antivirus.  No luck. Then I found the problem is with the driver of the bigfoot network card.

There is a new beta driver released for 8.1, I installed it, still not working.

In the last try, I removed all graphic card drivers (intel and nvidia) and the related software,  before reboot, I start upgrade windows 8.1, as soon as the system finished downloading from windows store and in the 'gather info' stage, I quickly removed the entire software and driver for network ( I can't do this before upgrade cuz I need it to connect to windows store), and the rest of upgrade went through without any issue.

Hope this can help some of you guys.

I've gotten the same error code twice on trying to install Win 8.1

    0xC1900101 0x40017

    Self Built PC

    i5 3570K

    Gigabyte G1.Sniper 3

    Nvidia GTX 570

    Samsung 840 Pro SSD

Tried both methods. Drivers are all the most recent versions from the manufacturer unless Windows Update found newer.

The antivirus I'm running is GData Antivirus 2014.

Last night I was working with a lady from the Microsoft support team.

    We tried the following,

    uninstalled McAfee

unplugged all external devices but a keyboard and mouse.  Heck, even my second monitor that uses HDMI

    ran a disk check

created a new Admin account to update with

all of these failed at 100% when applying computer settings.

At this point, this issue has been escalated to Microsoft level 2 support.  I'll have an update on Monday.
