"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    Had noticed that too. To be fair some of the comments aren't exactly helpful in solving the issue, but they nevertheless contribute to the debate.

    It only reports information back to Microsoft but help move things along.

    At least MS has finally the decency to say it "will take time" to examine multiple logs.

    That's the first indication of any kind they are taking an interest.

    I hope they do not continue to delete log entries and we reach the magical 100 pages, but I suspect this is a gag as Bill has left!

    FWIW, I have tried everything suggested to date and nothing has worked.  I have a pretty well vanilla system and the only thing left upon to me apart from waiting - which I will do - would be to have a fresh Windows 8 install.  As I have nothing but the drivers (all updated) on a Probook 4540s I do not see the point in going down the fresh install W8 then W8.1 update route.  To take an analogy from a now-deleted post in this forum, this would be the equivalent of taking the wheels off the car, then the windscreen wipers, and then finally getting a new model to update with W8.1.

    Come on MS, considering W8 (non-tablet version) was a nightmare in terms of concept, W8.1 should at least get something of the dream content back.

    So it's not Oracle VirtualBox ... I'll try a different program tomorrow.

    Is it true that if we get to 100 pages with no-one from Microsoft offering a solution then it gets escalated to Bill Gates for a personal comment ?
