"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    Why do I get the feeling the rest of us (non-NVIDIA) are being ignored here? My Dell laptop is only 2 years old, and takes Win8 perfectly. Starting to sound like we have to buy new computers with the OS preinstalled and the software OS upgrades just don't get any attention anymore -- particularly when they are offered for free like this one.

    I meet all the system requirements. Perhaps Microsoft needs to update these system requirements to the absolute extreme to outline drivers, etc if the install package is not doing this properly.

    To answer you question I tried it with a retail version and the only way it worked was to repair to a complete refresh, basically a clean install. See my other response on or near page 24 of this thread.

    Fortunately for me imaged my hard drive before the upgrade which I would recommend everyone do so I just reinstalled the image afterwards.

    One of my PCs took the upgrade no problem, and all my installations are the "cheap" kind.  The only noticeable difference to me between the two (aside from hardware) is one has media center pro pack (the one that fails), and the other doesn't.

    Has anyone tried the ISO and failed the same as the Windows store method?  Just checking here...

    Also, has anyone noticed that Microsoft has made no acknowledgement of this upgrade disaster other than RT?  Are they working on it, or just accepting the losses?

    Lastly, we have 24 months to fix this issue or Microsoft EOLs us.  Not a big deal as I see a new operating system coming out within that timeframe, but if this is an indicator of what the new Microsoft looks like, those of us with hardware that can't upgrade (even to the next version?) will have two years of life left in our PCs if we stay with Microsoft.

    Interestingly enough, the requirement of PAE eliminates any of the pre-C2Ds that were upgraded to 8, and of course, if we don't find a solution for our more modern equipment, we're screwed too.

    Is this Microsoft's way of saying "we're almost done with being a consumer O.S. company?"  lol

    Well ,tried to update from a pre-installed windows 8 to windows 8.1 and guess what?It did,nt work out!So my argument with this cheap ugrade was a bit premature!My argument was invalid,so to speak!

    My friend took cheap upgrade path and updated to win 8.1 without problems.
