"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Wait for 8.2 or 9 and hope to God Microsoft gets their act together by then?  Seriously, that's all I've got left.  My colleagues won't touch it now even though I told them it couldn't hurt.  The thought being if I can't do it then they won't even try.

I have 187 Steam apps installed, so I for one am not going to start over from day 1 to get 8.1.

I have done everything possible minus starting from day one and ripping my video card out of the machine (which really sucks, because I have an nForce motherboard with an onboard nvidia video card - likely to fail too if Microsoft hates nvidia).

So unless anyone has another miracle cure, I am beat.

    Hi,

I have tried all three of these steps with no success.  Still receiving the 0xc1900101-0x40017 error.  All of the drivers on my computer have been updated to the newest windows 8.1 drivers as well with no success in updating.  Any other ideas?

Hey man, thanks a lot for the reminder.

What I actually did to solve my issue... first thing was i couldnt install the update because of the Steel Series engine..so i had to remove the steel series driver which i did next thing was .. as you gave me a tip i uninstalled the KB driver updates from the control panel afterwards the automatic updates kicked in restarted the PC 2 times and its working like a charm

had to uninstall the windows updates (only the newest ones) thru CTRL ALT DEL task manager\browse\

I would just like to say that i too had been getting the error. I have a NVIDIA card, went to their site and updated my drivers.

I'm running 8.1 now, but i think MS did fix the update now. it was smooth sailing too, took less than an hour.
