"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

While I agree with the others that it's disappointing to see things rehashed, this response does give me one more (well, actually two more) ideas:

1.  I never thought to install an 8.1 driver on an 8.0 machine.  If that's what you're saying, perhaps I'll try that.
2.  The consistent pointing at NVidia made me think that perhaps what the previous poster had said is what needs to be tried:  Removing the card and updating with built in graphics.  Unfortunately my board is an nforce board which *likely* means that the built in graphics are NVidia, leaving me with no alternative to update my machine.

Forgetting every manufacturer except Intel integrated was quite the oversight for MS, don't you think?

I had to UNINSTALL both of my graphics cards and remove the drivers, then do the upgrade, and then install the updated drivers for both.

It DID NOT work for me with the latest drivers installed prior to trying the upgrade.

NVIDIA has finally added the driver to their update system, installing now, hopefully it will work and I will get to be one of the few enjoying 8.1, but I agree, worst roll out since Vista, hopefully unlike Vista the problems will be fixed instead of being left behind and moving on to the next idea

Error 0xC1900101 - 0x40017 is caused by a driver error during boot.  To install Windows 8.1, try these solutions that have worked for some customers so far:

 

1. Make sure all drivers have been updated prior to installing Windows 8.1.
2. Check for and uninstall the SteelSeries Engine software, which is currently not supported in Windows 8.1.  See this link for a list of hardware devices that use the SteelSeries Engine.
3. If your PC contains NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards, update to Windows 8.1-compatible drivers by visiting this blog containing direct links to the compatible drivers.

Does NOT work for me. As stated in prior post, I have double checked everything and NOTHING fixes the install error. ALL drivers are up to date and there is nothing else I can do until this trash is fixed. MS has REALLY been making consumers PO recently and it seems nothing has changed on their side.

As others have pointed out, these issues arose in the PREVIEW and still NOT fixed. VERY poor coding and one of the worst roll outs I have seen since Vista or worse!

I am experiencing this issue on a custom PC with a ASUS P8B75-M LX motherboard, Intel Core i5-3220 CPU and MSI N5600GTX Ti graphics card.

I have unplugged all USB devices for doing the update, however I still experience the issue.

We understand that this is an issue where 3rd party vendors have not updated their software/drivers

Is there any log of what driver is causing the failure? While pointing to SteelSeries and/or Nvidia is a start, it doesnt work for everybody

I physically removed my Nvidia card just to have install fail again.

After many attempts (each one taking close to 2 hours), it finally turned out to the be the Kaspersky AV engine. MS should be exposing the vendor that is causing the issue in the first place.
