"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I have a system reserve on my drive, however I think you are on the right track. My computer is running a RAID0 configuration, I believe windows has difficulty after the reboot to figure out the drive configuration of the system. I download the windows 8.1 ISO and burned it on to a disk. At the install screen the setup did not recognize any hard drives. I thought something was corrupt and did a clean installation of Windows 8. Only updated the computer with KB2871389 update and then tried to install Windows 8.1 with no avail. From this I conclude that it is a drive configuration error with the update.

    The problem could be in the hard drive not reporting the proper information MTBF;

    Fix Corrupt Files and Disk Errors with Chkdsk /SpotFix; Then reinstall Windows 8 and continue to Windows 8.1

    Hey guys,

    Lots of people experiencing this problem.

    I received the error OxC1900101-0x40017 cannot install Windows 8.1, rolling back to Windows8

    Running i7 2600k on Asus Maximus Extreme 4-Z, GTX560, 8GB RAM and Crucial M4 128MB SSD as OS device.

    Will watch this thread to see if Microsoft can fix.

    Not a good start to a long overdue update

    I  have this issue too!

    Wasted 3 days and several hours with the MS Answer Desk techies trying to resolve it... and still trying.

    My machine details:

    Dell XPS L521X Laptop

    Intel icore 7-3632QM

    8Gb memory

    Intel HD Graphics 4000

    Nvidia GeForce GT640M

    Dell Wireless 1901

    Samsung SSD PM8

    Generic Hard Disk

    Windows 8 Professional

    No external devices

    Ya i have the same problem with my hp dv6 7012tx. I have up to date drivers. I ran a troubleshooter for windows updates and the update was reset to zero %. Any idea how to get around this problem
