"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

I am also having exactly the same problem upgrading my Acer Aspire from Windows 8 to 8.1. Everything is up to date and I have nothing connected apart from the mouse and keyboard.

I have tried 3 times to install the upgrade but I get the blue screen and it restores Windows 8.

Well, they did say they "got rid of the bloat" by stripping out many drivers and what have you, although I'm pretty sure I didn't see a guy with baggy pants and red ball on his nose giving this speech, but hey, these are funny guys!

On an even more lighter note, from what I'm gathering, only Intel/onboard Intel graphics cards are working.  Anything AMD and NVidia is failing.  That's why I was able to update my yoga?  IDK.  I'm not really willing to rip out my video card in my desktop to test this theory.  I mean, tearing out components to make software work sounds so darn convenient, but ugh... I'm just that darn lazy.

Oh, and it's not drivers... I've got NVidia experience installed, so I get the latest and greatest in technology delivered to my PC the moment it happens!

(I also tried disabling all my drivers and installing - know what happens when you uninstall your video card?  Funny stuff...)

Hold up guys... I'm going to run the update again.  What's another 1/2 hour between friends?  (Microsoft, we're friends, right?)

I do appreciate we only have to go through 1/2 hour of checks instead of hours redownloading - they definitely got that right (maybe they knew many of us would be practicing the definition of insanity?)

After having the same issues mentioned here Ive spent hours finding updated drivers, removing any software that could be causing an issue etc etc etc.............and it still doesnt work, same error.

I cant be bothered to carry on with this its crazy, what is wrong with you Microsoft, surely after 30 yrs plus of making OS's you can make one that just works and the user is not required to be nuclear physicist to operate the damn thing ..........

Are there any users with this problem without Nvidia graphics?

Yes, I'm getting it with AMD card and I have the very latest drivers which claim to be Windows 8.1 compatible installed.

I am also using an AMD card with the latest graphic drivers...

I had the NVidia 8.1 drivers installed before I tried and I tried it with AV disabled... no joy... from what I'm reading here, it's mostly speculation, and a few successes... for me, I think its a bug in the installer which I hope the big dopes fix pretty soon...
