"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I did a similar thing (Dell XPS 8500 with integrated Intel card + ATI card) in so much as I flippsed the BIOS switch to enable the intel card and ran from there. It went wrong in a different way, hung at 85% or something "preparing devices" but alas, not a success for me.

    Also have a RAID mirror, which I'm starting to suspect. Intel RST for me.

    Are there any users with this problem without Nvidia graphics? 

    Hey there -- I noted in my original post that I have an ATI Radeon HD 5400. I tried 3 different ways:  1) I removed all Catalyst software, deleted directories, removed entries in the registry and used the Microsoft ATI generic driver. 2) Another time, after all this, I just used the low-resolution generic MS driver. 3) Updated the ATI Catalyst software to the Windows 8.1 display video beta driver before installing Windows 8.1.

    All of these scenarios did not fix the problem -- so, although it is working for some Nvidia users -- it is not unique to just Nvidia.

    Yes, I'm getting it with AMD card and I have the very latest drivers which claim to be Windows 8.1 compatible installed.

    Upgraded (or tried to) 4 machines:-

    Intel NUC ... went fine

    Lenovo laptop - Nope

    Homebuilt AMD box ...went fine

    Homebuilt Intel box - Nope

    There's no obvious commonality between any of them, different graphics cards, different AV, some with MC some not etc.  All in all a 50% success rate is really rather poor. (Obviously tried all the usual, drivers, USB devices etc etc)
