"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    my pc is custom made and im on all the latest drivers and i too can join the 8.1 has failed club

    I am having the same issue. I tried a couple of times to install. It gets through to the second boot, up to about 86% and stalls for awhile, then there is a BSOD, with a message similar to "DRIVER_STATE_FAIL" Windows then reverts to 8 and the 0xC1900101

    • 0x40017 error is displayed.

    I have no third party virus or firewall installed. All drivers are as up to date as can be. Windows Update says its all updated.

    ASUS Maximus Hero VI mobo

    intel  i7 4770K

    32Gb DDR3 Ram

    Samsung 840 SSD

    Zboard keyboard and steel series mouse

    Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 2Gb

    I am not really keen on doing a clean install or removing components. Mainly because I think it's ridiculous of Microsoft to expect customers to do this. If all the drivers are working fine under 8, shouldn't it be fine under 8.1?

    I have the same laptop and had the same issue. I resolved it by updating some drivers - did you try updating your NVidia drivers? I installed the latest from NVidia's website. Among the drivers I updated, I think its the NVidia drivers that caused the problem.

    Also seeing this error, although rather than a blue screen I get blank screens. Same error code reported when the system comes back up (after reverting 8.1 update). Also have a Samsung mSATA drive as a point of interest.

    Graphics drivers have always been flakey on this machine (ATI Radeon HD 7700). Used to have all sorts of problems even shutting the thing down.

    it seems 8.1 is incompatible with too many drivers. What you couldn't test this first Microsoft?
