"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I followed the advice of some others and uninstalled the Steelseries Engine and now my computer successfully updated to 8.1.

    I'm getting it after freezing on "getting ready", after the reboot.  I loaded fresh windows 8 and only allowed windows to patch.   Running on Asus G73JH

    That is what was causing my error. Updated successfully after removal of SteelSeries software.

    I have read through hundreds of these posts dating back to June...  I updated my laptop and it seemed to go fine, but the main desktop ended up with this Ramdisk error.  Typical answer from Microsoft is disable everything on your computer, wipe everything, and disconnect everything the second it reboots (and rip all the cards out of your system if that doesn't work). While I can say with certainty that 8.1 is a fairly worthwhile upgrade, NOTHING is worth this mess.  I had NO problems installing 8...  And 8.1 is MINOR UI changes and a few code cleanups?  Give me a break.

    Done with upgrades, and getting real tired of this, Microsoft.  I was the biggest cheerleader for Microsoft (I'm even a Software Engineer exclusively in Microsoft Systems), but this is becoming ridiculous.  Every time something gets upgraded, every time you want to do anything, there are forums upon forums filled with things like this.  WHY???  Why does it have to be a convoluted inane process?   Did I miss something, or is this the same company that's been successfully deploying operating system for the past 3 decades both in-home and enterprise alike?

    I never thought I'd see the day when I'd say: Linux is becoming less convoluted than Windows...  How did you guys let it get this way, and what is this world coming to?

    This is a milestone - not even a full version upgrade.  What will we have to do when Windows 9 rolls out?  Shake chickens over our computers and chant?

    One of my computers is a Pentium D, and while I forgive you for not allowing the latest Windows on super old hardware, how did hardware requirements change so drastically on a milestone update??

    I am beyond frustrated, and finding out that this has been going on throughout the preview only fuels that fire.  Sorry, but this is unacceptable.  Why bother having a preview and maintenance releases if you don't actually work on the problems during that time?

    "Microsoft is working on it?"  Since June?  I wouldn't hold my breath.

    Oh yeah, and I have 560 TI, Q9400, 4G RAM, AND 4TB HD Total - Microsoft SideWinder, Wireless X360 controller, and Logitech G15.  I've tried unplugging everything right after hitting restart, disabling memory management in bios, disabling VTX, removing all non-essential drivers from device manager, uninstalling everything but absolute necessities (gaming PC), disabled onboard sound, and sacrificed some goats, but all of that ended in the same error.

    Was able to share my experience with interested parties in my engineering group, and looks like they're keeping a 10 foot pole handy to help separate themselves from this update for the foreseeable future.

    Can't do much for drivers and unplugging external devices when I'm having the issue with a SURFACE RT!!!

    Wipe to factory.... Nope same issue

    Wow, Surface RT with the issue, that's widespread! My Surface RT was one of the three devices that DID update fine.
