I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying: "Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC. 0xC1900101 - 0x40017" There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Same error.

My install hangs at 85% and then the screen goes dark for hours. Only way out is a power off/power on, at which point I get the 'Couldn't update 0xC1900101 0x40017' error.

Tried three times, no Defender running, all Windows Updates installed. Same result every time.

Dell Inspiron Duo. Very clean machine. Nothing custom, none of the special drivers y'all mentioned.

Fortunately, have successfully updated three other devices to 8.1, but this one's nasty. Hope there's a fix soon.

Can't do much for drivers and unplugging external devices when I'm having the issue with a SURFACE RT!!!

Wipe to factory.... Nope same issue

I'm having the exact same issue. Please resolve this ASAP as it is very inconvenient. Particularly since Microsoft has chosen, in their unending wisdom, to not let us have an ISO for the 8.1 files.

I had planned on installing 8.1 over my Win 8 this weekend.

It was constantly freezing. Explorer.exe service mostly and whenever i wanted to reboot or shutdown my virtual Win 2012 Servers.

So i thought, a clean fresh installation and definitely not an upgrade.

Never relying on recovery partitions solely i felt i should have it on a stick as well.

But that "Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive" was greyed out.

I downloaded all the Windows updates available for my system.

Apparently it's a bug, there's a KB article about it and a fix for it. Downloaded it, tried installing it, got an error message that said something along the lines with "Doesn't apply to your computer/system".

I have a Samsung 535U(xx) with a Win 8 on it.

Then i found myself in the Store app after a few failed attempts on downloading the 8.1 .iso file from Microsoft DreamSpark.

There it clearly said "Upgrade to 8.1" and like a fool i thought i would get a download link to it. Yes, i know..hello.

It started to upgrade, and you generally don't just interrupt upgrades so i didn't.

It looked like it had succeeded and after installing it rebooted, applying, rebooting again and there it just did a sudden shut down after 20% somewhere.

I booted it up again, it was working for a minute then shut down again. Then i tried using the F4 for the recovery in Samsung. Didn't respond, tried 6-7 times. And no recovery stick.

Then after some attempts it said something about trying to perform a restore to my old version. Then it shut down again. Tried a few times with the same results.

I unplugged the mouse, TP and AC cable and pushed the Power button.

It booted up could restore it to my old version of W8.

I could have compacted this tons, and not having read all replies i feel that this never ending bible of mine might be redundant. But i thought hey, too much info only hurts the scroll finger

Well I finally found out what was keeping my update from installing. I own a Steele Series mouse and apparently the drivers for it aren't compatible with Windows 8.1. I uninstalled the drivers and the update installed no problem. Just throwing that out there if anyone else owns a Steele Series mouse.
