"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    I have a standard HP Elitebook 8440p running a Core i7 chip, no attached devices. I have run all the updates that are available, run Fixit registry cleanup, and updated drivers that are available. I still get the same error messages as reported by many others "page Fault in Nonpaged Area 0xC1900101-0x40017 when I try to update to Windows 8.1.

    I have contacted Microsoft Support online chat, to no avail, and the last time the assistant suggested I needed to pay for help which I don't think should be the case. Has there been any solution to this problem yet?

    I have an ASUS G750J laptop also running a Core i7 CPU. Also contacted MS for support and they want me to shell out $99 for a ONE TIME support. Which I refuse to do. Anybody have any luck getting around the infamous 0xC1900101-0x40017 error? I also tried doing the update manually as instructed by MS here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335

    I'm at a loss here.

    interesting, now they have a direct link to 8.1? have you tried this download? same result as end up with 0x40017? just checking, its for 8.1 not 8.1 update 1, right? I might give it try or not, I want to get proper update as I paid for this ****, on the other hand, why waste another 20 mins as I've wasted so much before :(

    way to go Microsoft another botched hack job now my computer has lost one of it's 800 dollar video cards...do they actually try this **** out first

    Hi guys, I just want to follow this up to see if anyone's got any luck going through the update without getting the error 0x40017 lately? after so many times of failure, i dont really want to waste another 15 mins of doing such **** again, and yet it seems MS stopped caring about this problem no matter how many users are facing this problem.

    I've been trying to update my OS to Windows 8.1. I have Acer Aspire V3 -471G, Intel Core i7, 2.4Ghz with Turbo Boost up to 3.4 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M with 2 GB Dedicated VRAM, 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, 37.4 GB free on main HDD, and 15.5 GB on backup HDD. Made sure I met all system requirements, updated all drivers, but I'm getting error:

    "Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017
