"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    Same here, donwloaded the update then a blue screen on the reboot message saying 'a device required is not available', it doesnt mention which device/driver.  

    All drivers up to date, ran a chkdsk and sfc, tried the installation 4 times now.  Im running a Macbook Air with Intel HD4000 graphics, maybe its a problem with a driver somewhere, I dont know but I was quite liking Windows 8, infact I have stopped using OSX, but this issue is reminding me that things just work with OSX, Windows can be such a pain to say the least!

    Come on, any ideas Microsoft?

    Try uninstalling NVIDIA drivers and DO NOT reboot, install 8.1 after nvidia driver uninstall. This has worked for some people

    The Key to this is not to reboot. If you uninstall the graphics card and reboot the system windows will re-install the drivers automatically.

    Steps

    1. Uninstall the card : Control Panel/ System / Device Manager / Video right click the video card Uninstall
    2. Go to the windows store and run the update.

    In my case, I found that a remnant of unwelcome software "kisknl.sys" prevented the final installation of my Win 8.1 upgrade.  I felt that this was a necessary security prevention from Microsoft, but its presence only revealed itself after 2 unsuccessful installations.  Many users are loaded with Registry conflicts and should do a thorough before updating.

    I also can't update from win 8 to win 8.1....

    I get the same errorcode: "0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

    I have an Asus K55VJ Laptop, and have none extra hardware Connected when I Upgrade the

    OS.

    I also have installed the latest drivers from NVIDIA, but this didn't work for me either...

    HELP!!!
