"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I had installed the Windows 8.1 update previously on my computer.  The hard drive failed.  All I did was get a new hard drive.  I installed Windows 8.0 Pro (64 bit), and then I installed ALL of the updates.  I keep trying to install this 8.1 upgrade from the Store, and it will not install.  I, also, keep getting this 0x800F0830-0x20017 error message.

Microsoft does not understand that individuals may have a CAP on the data GB with their internet carrier.  I'm already approaching my 300 GB limit.  Now it looks like I have to wipe my drive, and start all over again downloading all the updates again, and then having to download the 8.1 update, and hope that it works.

I also have several machines that are running the RETAIL version of Windows 8.0.  It would be nice if I could download the update ONE time, and then install it on all of my computers.  I should not have to download a HUGE 3.6 GB update file for every machine.

Microsoft, please get a clue as to real life for real people.

You are making this update much more difficult that it needs to be!!!!!

Having the windows 8.1 update issues too. 

I am trying to do the update from windows 8 on a pretty much fresh out of the box HP Envy 15.6" Sleekbook with 4th generation i5 core processor, 8GB DDR3, and no dedicated graphics. The only device installed being a Logitec T630 mouse. Other programs are just a few apps from the Windows store, GoPro video editing software, Steam and some Cyberlink programs.

The update get through to checking the drivers and gets maybe half way through (don't think it got over 50% through) before going to a black screen and locking up. The computer then needs to be rebooted by holding the power button until the reboot happens. Then it boots back up and says it is restoring the previous version of windows with the final error message being

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1.

Sorry, we couldn't update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous versions of Windows to this PC.  0xC1900101 - 0x3000D"

It is a shame that Microsoft is so buggy with each release. I find the same thing with my Windows phone which for the most part I love. Apart from the fact that it has now started duplicating every photo I take but you can't even delete just one of the photos.... but that is a whole different rant.

I tried again today to upgrade to 8.1, in the hope that after more than 2 months, MS had had the time to fix the issues.

All updates are obviously applied etc...

And: Failed again... with the same useless error code: 0x40017!!

After going through what seems the complete process for about 45 minutes, setting up devices, setting up the PC, applying PC settings, and than, BSOD immediately after the final reboot.

This is so ridiculous.

Microsoft, what are you guys doing about it? Is there at least a way to get a meaningful diagnostic message?? a description of what goes wrong?? some hints about what can be done??

Just to be complete, I have been looking into the logs, but that doesn't make me wiser... and I do have some computer experience...

guys my case is also the same but error code is little bit different 0xc1900101 - 0x30018

There must be some log somewhere that would give me a clue about which driver is causing the error?

Can anyone tell me where I could find such a log?

Windows 8.1 "The New Vista"!

I have tried everything in this blog short of the clean install of 8.1.  More than a dozen attempts with failure at the second reboot screen.  Maybe if the Redmond people asked for help from the support people in India we could move this forward.

Does anyone know if there is a time limit that a new machine has to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1?  Else, I'll wait for 8.2.

CMA
