"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Wow, I'm not making any progress on this issue myself. I'm running a stock DELL XPS 12 convertible Windows 8 hybrid. I fail in the exact same way. I've tried updating all the drivers, bios, and many other system checks. Unplugged my only external devices, etc., etc.

Still seems to be no solution from Microsoft and everything I reads sounds like Microsoft isn't being very proactive with a fix. You've got a lot of people on the forums offering to send debug logs but no apparent takers on Microsoft's side.

I don't want to do a clean install and loose the way my machine is configured. The last thing I'm working on is that sfc /scannow was returning and error but this may have happened during the failed 8.1 installs.

    I ran

    Dism /Online /Clean-Image /ScanHealth

    and

    Dism /Online /Clean-Image /RestoreHealth

Which correct component store corruption and now sfc /scannow works correctly.

I'm going to fully uninstall my Displaylink drivers and try the Windopws 8.1 update again but it will have to wait until Monday.

This only works if you have a recent HP laptop as well that uses Ralink Bluetooth. If not, my fix doesn't apply to you.

Also, the HP laptops come with "Software drivers" for Bluetooth, that's why you go into uninstall a program in the control panel and do it from there (rather than the device manager)

Right everybody, I just found a fix that will help a lot of people with HP laptops.

I recently bought a HP ENVY 15-j030eb and had the same problems updating to Windows 8.1 that everyone here describes.

As has been pointed out previously, this is a driver issue.

The driver on certain HP laptopsthat prevents Windows from updating is

    The Ralink Bluetooth Driver

Go into your control panel -> Uninstall a program and then uninstall the Ralink Bluetooth driver.

Also, just to be on the safe side, uninstall Norton Security as it is incompatible with the update.

(use the Norton Removal Tool here https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us?

    Now update.

    Worked a treat for me.

I hope this helps at least some of you, I know how annoying this all is.

Good luck to everyone else, I hope this gets properly sorted out soon.

    After 40 attempts to update to 8.1, I did it!!!. The solution is always more simple then the problem. At least in my case. Time did its work;

I did everything on this topic over and over again. Clean installs and updates from 8.0 to 8.1. With original drivers and drivers provided by MS. I tried it with regular MS updates and without them. After 30 tries or so I concluded it had to be my raid 0 configuration, because I was able to clean install win 8.1 on a single ssd hardrive. But my main goal was a working version on my fast raid 0 ssd hardrives.

The solution came from MSI. They released an new bios update on my x79 board. With this my Intel RSTe driver updated from 3.7 to 3.8. With that came some brand new Intel drivers on the MSI website.

Next I converted my raid 0 from MBR to GPT. I set my bios for UEFI USB and HD bootup. Removed the bootmgr file from my MS 8.0 USB install stick so it would start in EFI. I installed the normal windows 8.0 on my raid 0. Everything normal so far (first time with UEFI). I replaced all the MS original standard Intel drivers with the new files from the MSI website and installed my virusscanner from ESET (I am paranoia). Next I updated all te regular MS updates (70 or so) and made a full hardisk backup with Acronis True Image (so i could easely recover to the latest point).

Next I downloaded the update to 8.1 from the store and..... it went all the way true.... for the first time where it normaly got stuck on the "preparing fase"

    Summary:

    1. Update bios and download all the new drivers
    2. Install clean win 8.0 on GTP formated raid 0 ssd's in UEFI-mode
    3. Install all the original drivers from the manufacturer
    4. Install all the ms updates
    5. Update succesfully to 8.1

Oh... and I removed the restore point for windows. I always do that but i dont know if this is important for this story.

I hope I can help someone with this.
