"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    Hi All,

The Only fix for this is to perform a custom installation.

    0xC1900101 - 0x40017.- Solved

    Hey Guys!!,

I had the same issue in my laptop, I followed the all the step which me found on this forum. But nothing happened.

But now fortunately  i got the solution of this issue . you just have to follow some step here.

    1. Go in the search option and write **" refresh "**so you will find a option like "Refresh your PC without effecting your files" just select this
    2. what will happen to do this . it will take some time to completed and it will remove all the window update and some third party software from your PC ( Including MS Office) and some drivers update .

but it will not effect your system file and all your important data surely  even your PC setting also. after completed this activity , it will tell you about the removed program list as well. so you can reinstall all again.

    1. so now after complete this one. you need to update your window fully , no need to update any driver.
    2. then Open store and download the Window 8.1 and try to install it .

and Enjoy Window 8.1 !!!! with new start button

I am pretty sure that 100% this problem will be resolve .

    Thanks

Still no joy on this mess :(

On a lark I tried MS compatibility adviser and guess what... it returns an error... so bottom line here is that MS doesn't know what works and what doesn't... what they broke or how to fix it...  and all this nonsense for what's little more than a service pack...

KNOCK KNOCK... anybody home at Microsoft ??????

It's been over a month now... I've tried loads of the suggestions on this thread with no luck. Can anyone from Microsoft respond and give a status update please? When will this be fixed? I'm happy to run any debugging/diagnostic tools you want to help diagnose the problem.
