Windows 8/8.1 Explorer hangs when renaming a file through MTP

Hi,

I've been itching to talk about this problem for a long time, But was waiting for a solution to come up through windows updates. I was having this issue since i had Windows 8 64 bit. I would connect my Lumia using a USB cable and copying back and forth are fine, Moving too is OK, But cannot rename a single file or folder whatsoever. Another problem with Windows Explorer makes it hang every time i open a folder with executables (.exe). It just freezes till all the thumbnails are generated for the exe's and believe me, it takes some time. This issue too started with Windows 8.

I am using Windows for 6 years now. Started with WinXP Pro x86, Win7 x64, Win8 x64, and now Win8.1 x64.

And now is the first time i am in such a rage like this.

I Update my PC daily.

Those i can understand... maybe a miscommunication between android and Windows. But Windows Phone and Windows? Are you kidding me?

They say these share 33% code or something... isn't that supposed to help them work along better?

I don't know, but i think they need to.

I mean, i can't even use a Wireless LAN network with my Windows Phone and Windows, but an android phone can,

I don't have remote desktop access from my Windows Phone to Windows, but android has,

I don't have home group functionality, no inherent way to sync files

(Yes i have the Windows Phone app, isn't much of a thing, every other manufacturer has an alternative. I am talking about core integration)

Thats another case. atleast i would like my Phone to run along with my PC.

PS: I previously joined in a conversation about facebook not syncing on my phone. Its been a few days and i still have nothing. The problem persists even after 2 weeks now. I use a Nokia Lumia 620.

    Unfortunately it's still only a workaround (and thanks for sharing this!). It's sad that new versions of Windows brings more problems than a real solutions. I could understand that some of the new features brings new problems but this... It looks like M$ don't do any regression tests at all :( And what's worse they don't listen to their customers at all. I mean this thread is 3y old... o.O I don't know. Maybe people use their phones different ways these times.

    Win10(1511)+all updates

    Asus Z170 i7 PC

    Samsung Galaxy S7

    Android 6.0.1

    Still freezes dead on file rename and can kill entire explorer task, so even start/task bar disappears .

    Fortunately you can restart it from task manager.

    PS: I have a bunch of problems with windows now (apart from this new one), and nothing seems to be acknowledged as bugs, no solutions provided, and even worse, getting a second and following reply from support is near impossible. Very disappointed.

    Same here, I'm currently running Windows 7 and using a Galaxy S7 and the problem persists, I had exactly the same issue with my old Galaxy S5

    For me it seems to be any changes made to files crash explorer, sometimes it occurs when just trying to browse to those folders. 

    This needs fixing seeing as so many people use android nowadays.

    Recapitulation of 3 solutions given in this forum:

    On Windows 10 pc renaming a file or folder in the USB connected Windows Phone or its SD, and clicking in white space to confirm, results in the whole folder's "Not Responding".

    Every other job on the pc can be continued while waiting for response.

    --- Normal response of the files and folders on the Phone comes after waiting for a few minutes.

    The renaming of the file or folder is finally succesful then.

    Renaming every other file or folder in the USB connected Windows Phone and its SD works normally from that moment on, even if you confirm by clicking in white space .

    The initially "Not Responding" issue can be avoided in 2 different ways:

    --- if the renaming is done followed by hitting "Return" instead of confirming by clicking in white space outside the file that is being renamed

    --- or if we first put the folder concerned in "Detail" view mode, and do the renaming only then.

    It's up to Windows to make "clicking in white space" work also as soon as possible.
