Windows 8/8.1 Explorer hangs when renaming a file through MTP

Hi,

I've been itching to talk about this problem for a long time, But was waiting for a solution to come up through windows updates. I was having this issue since i had Windows 8 64 bit. I would connect my Lumia using a USB cable and copying back and forth are fine, Moving too is OK, But cannot rename a single file or folder whatsoever. Another problem with Windows Explorer makes it hang every time i open a folder with executables (.exe). It just freezes till all the thumbnails are generated for the exe's and believe me, it takes some time. This issue too started with Windows 8.

I am using Windows for 6 years now. Started with WinXP Pro x86, Win7 x64, Win8 x64, and now Win8.1 x64.

And now is the first time i am in such a rage like this.

I Update my PC daily.

Those i can understand... maybe a miscommunication between android and Windows. But Windows Phone and Windows? Are you kidding me?

They say these share 33% code or something... isn't that supposed to help them work along better?

I don't know, but i think they need to.

I mean, i can't even use a Wireless LAN network with my Windows Phone and Windows, but an android phone can,

I don't have remote desktop access from my Windows Phone to Windows, but android has,

I don't have home group functionality, no inherent way to sync files

(Yes i have the Windows Phone app, isn't much of a thing, every other manufacturer has an alternative. I am talking about core integration)

Thats another case. atleast i would like my Phone to run along with my PC.

PS: I previously joined in a conversation about facebook not syncing on my phone. Its been a few days and i still have nothing. The problem persists even after 2 weeks now. I use a Nokia Lumia 620.

It's been almost 3 years since I started this thread. I've seen so many people ranting about this. I updated my PC to Windows 8.1, updated my phone OS several times, I joined the Insider program, I sold my Lumia 620 and bought a Lumia 730, I used a lot of Insider builds all up to the official Windows 10 release last year. I continued testing some builds of the Redstone branch, I bought a Moto E, a Microsoft Lumia 640 XL Dual Sim, I installed the Anniversary update on my PC, recently installed the same on my Phone.

In short, it's been a long time. This so called small bug made me cringe during every stage above. I finally gave up and stopped trying some time ago. Its 2016 and i can't rename a file on my phone using my PC. I can change the name of my entire phone, I can remotely lock my phone, ring my phone, erase my phone, I can use Cortana on my PC to send a text from my phone. Still, I can't rename a folder on my phone through a hard cable. Over a solid copper cable connected physically, like together and all.

I've stopped worrying about this and started smiling after writing these two paragraphs. Its more like a comedy now. To all the people who have replied here, go home, forget this. Go on Reddit or 9gag, read some funny stuff.

Hi, I switched to an Android phone and you know what? Renaming folders is the same pain! :-) funny like the preceding writers paragraphs...

Hi Vladimir, and hi to all others who are affected by this nasty performance issue.

I'm working in developer support escalation services for Microsoft.

Now, while I need to excuse for Microsoft haven taken such a long time to address the performance issues described throughout this long lasting discussion, finally, there is a relief available which should address most of the described scenarios. For example when trying to rename a resource like a file or folder on your device shortly after connecting it.

The fix is currently checked into Windows 10 and was published along Insider builds.

There are currently no plans to port this fix back to previous Windows versions.

A public fix for regular Non-Insider Windows builds will be made available later on this year (I hope you can understand that I cannot post specific release dates).

You could chose to test yourself using a Windows Insider Build like 14986 or higher, see also https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2016/12/07/announcing-windows-10-insider-preview-build-14986-pc/

You can download an .iso to install it from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windowsinsiderpreviewadvanced

Using earlier Windows 10 builds, I had to wait up to 45s for a rename operation to complete against a file stored on my Lumia 930, another Lumia 950 and a Galaxy Tab.

I hope the fix works for anyone who is still affected as it works for me.

If this is true, this marks history. I thank you with the whole of my heart. I am not yet marking this as an answer though. I'll wait for the first Release preview build with this bug fix for that. I stopped using the more buggier W10 versions since the newer builds are farther apart and adds very little.
