The problem file. seems to be msvbvm60.dll Version 6.1.7600.16385.

I did all that. I tried all the possible combinations and got exactly the same result. I have two internal drives and an external, it made no difference. I even tried with WinZip but that was the same. I tried connecting an external DVD drive and ran the original disc I bought, same outcome and an iso of the downloaded file, exactly the same. Corrupt files could not be copied. I guess that means that Windows thinks one of my programmes is corrupt and wont copy it to save it ready to re-install after the upgrade. Strange thing is that the report for items that can run in W7 64 is clear? I expect that the only way is a re-install with format but as I tried that and am still having the same problems I am reluctant to go through all that again. If I back up I will be placing potentially corrupt files back in and be right back where we started.

Is it possible to identify the corrupt files from the SFC report and replace them? That appears to be my only option, other than to learn to live without updates, fix its and eventually Microsoft...........

If you think there is a way to replace the corrupt files from the original CD let me know. Otherwise I think I have reached the end of the road.

The error code is a difficult one to get an interpretation of what it means. Did you extract before you ran setup?

Using the program (ex: 7-Zip) from step 1, extract the Windows 7 SP1 ISO file to a folder on a partition or HDD other than the current Windows 7 partition. (see screenshot below)

I have already been down this route. I tried an upgrade re-install using my Windows 7 Professional 64 bit SP 1 disc bought with hard earned cash from Microsoft. I cot an error message during the file copying stage that some files were corrupt. Error 0x80070241.

I downloaded the same operating system, Windows 7 Professional 64 bit SP 1 from Digital river, burned a copy onto a DVD at the slowest speed settings and got exactly the same response

I downloaded Windows 7 Professional 64 bit SP 1 again and placed it on a separate drive to C:. I downloaded 7-zip and unzipped it to exactly the same drive and got exactly the same failure at exactly the same point exactly the same error code 0.x80070241.

I downloaded another fresh copy of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit SP 1 to another drive and unzipped it to another drive (downloaded to e:\ (different disc) and unzipped to F:\ (same disc) and yes I got the same result at the same point error code 0x80070241.

I have downloaded to both internal drives. I have used the same drive and I have used the other drive when extracting and the result is exactly the same.

I looked up the error message on Microsoft's website. Nothing official but a lot of chatter from disgruntled customers.

So after all this time and messing around I am no further forward. Microsoft really don't give a tinkers toss. I bought Windows 7 Professional 64 bit because I wanted to use my pc. Not so that I could spend all my time trying to get the OS to work properly.

If I sound ungrateful Gerry then I apologise. It's not your fault, I mam sure you are a very capable and very nice guy. But if Microsoft don't give a toss you are as screwed as I am. Come over to Linux, I'm going the Ubuntu route. I have it running like a dream on another pc with all I need, including Libre office for free.

To resolve your problem of corrupted files download a copy of Windows 7 Professional SP1 64bit and place it on a partition other than C on an internal drive. You can then carry out an In Place Upgrade using that copy of Windows 7 to repair and replace the corrupted files. At the end of this procedure you will need to reactivate Windows using your product key.
