Select Start, All Programs, Windows Update, Change Settings. Under Important Updates is a box showing the current setting. Click on the Arrow down to the right and change the selection to “Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them” and click on OK. Restart your computer three times to clear pending updates.

I suggest you run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool in normal mode and copy and paste the results in a reply for further analysis:

Run the Tool and when it completes click the Copy button, open a text file like Word or Notepad and select Edit, Paste. You can paste directly into a reply here. Open a reply, right click and select Paste.

You are missing all the excitement. I still get the 0x800B100 error but! I decided to give SFC one more run and it reported that it couldn't run because there was a repair update pending. I restarted and low and behold I was presented with the updating screen. 96/149 in actual fact. The hard drive was taking a right pounding so I left things alone. After about 20 minutes the waiting was becoming tedious. So after 30 minutes I pressed and held my on button. On restarting I was advised to wait as updates were being configured. After several minutes I was advised that the configuration had failed and the system was reverting.

So is that progress? Are we half way there (as that old joke goes). Is there hope? Do fairies live at the bottom of gardens?

Please provide an updated copy of your System Information file. Type System Information in the Search Box above the start Button and press the ENTER key (alternative is Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information). Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new System Information file each time system information is accessed. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy. Please upload to your OneDrive (formerly Sky Drive), share with everyone and post a link here. Reports in normal mode preferred. Please say if the report has been obtained in safe mode.

Please upload and share with everyone fresh copies of your System and Application logs from your Event Viewer to your One Drive (formerly Sky Drive) and post a link here. You can remove the earlier copies of the logs from your OneDrive.

To access the System log select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, from the list in the left side of the window expand Windows Logs and select System. Place the cursor on System, select Action from the Menu and Save All Events as (the default evtx file type) and give the file a name. Do the same for the Applications log. Do not provide filtered files. Do not clear logs whilst you have a continuing problem.

There has been a development. I decided to see if this Native host/user defibed issue was anything to do with .net. So I repaired .net4 and downloaded .dotnet 4.5.

I now get messages in my action centre (should that be inaction centre?) that I have downloads waiting for me. I clicked on Windows update and after a while it reported a list of downloads, but nothing else. I then tried update again and got the same error message as before, 800B0100.

Maybe I should get on with suing Microsoft for breach of contract? Or even breach of promise as they told me I would be amazed at what Windows 7 and I can do together...........
