You cannot update Windows if Windows is not activated!

I was having trouble with updates. So much so that I was tired of the crashes, hangs, restarts, etc. I re-formatted my drive and reinstalled Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 from my disk. Re-installed all the drivers, programmes, registered with Microsoft and got authenticated. Whoopee! Still wont update. So I decided to run the Fix It but no. Apparently it encounters a user induced break point. During the installation I did not amend or adjust any settings and therefore am innocent I tell you! Ahem, I have searched Microsoft and the internet for a solution but nothing appears to work. Anyone know of a Fix It to Fix a Fix it? When I run updates (which is why I sought help in the first place) I get error 800B0100 which does not help very much at all. Can't say I am that impressed with Microsoft at the moment but maybe someone there will be able to put that right. I pasted a screen shot of the error below but I bet its not here once I submit.

You cannot update Windows if Windows is not activated!
Hi Gerry
I am sure you mean well and genuinely want to help. Sadly we are becoming distracted from the key issues. The problem is twofold. Firstly that I could not run updates, they failed with an error message (see above). The second problem was that I could not run the automated fix its due to a User Defined Break Point. I know how to enter the key but frankly I prefer to focus upon problem 1 and problem 2 which is where I started.
So question 1
Why cant I run Microsoft updates (See above)?
Question 2
How do I resolve user defined break points (see above)?
Nigel
Select Start, right click Computer, and select Properties. You will find Windows Activation at the bottom of the windows. Click Change Product Key and enter the Product Key (25 characters) and click Next to activate over the internet.

Sorry Gerry
I had a general anaesthetic yesterday and clearly still a bit groggy. I ran the update which downloaded and installed without a hitch. I then ran the diagnostic again.

Hi Gerry
Something really weird is happening. When I started having problems with updates I checked that the key was valid and was accepted as genuine. I might add I had no reason to doubt the voracity of the key or the vender. When I installed the OS last July(ish) all was well with the validation process. When I reinstalled Windows 7 a couple of weeks ago again all was fine and it was reported as genuine. It should be a Windows 7 64 bit system. I have the original disc but when I couldn't do an upgrade install I also used a version I had downloaded from Digital River. Both upgrades failed before ever asking for a key.
After I ran the diagnostic I was asked to enter the key which then reported an error, that the key was invalid. So, what is going on here? Valid, valid, invalid? Doesn't make sense. I have the label right here in front of me and can give the other numbers printed on it if asked.
