ChangeIcon MFC Application has stopped working.

Since the last set up updateson 16/09/2014 for "Update for WIndows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2976719), (KB2989647) and (KB2984006)", I have been getting an error everytime I start up my computer stating that "changeicon MFC application has stopped working". It states the issue as an "app crash" and that the relevant program is "UMonit64.exe".

I traced to program to its directory and ran all my virus/malware/etc scans on it and they all said it was fine. I then attempted to run the program and it came up with the same error that pops up on startup and a second error message saying it wasn't able to run because "ustor.dll" was missing.

I did a system restore to before I did the windows update and sure enough everything worked fine. I then ran the windows update again after restarting to complete the update the "changeicon MFC application has stopped working" error message started popping up again.

So my questions are:

  1. What is UMonit64.exe/ChangeIcon Application?
  2. Did my windows update cause the issue?
  3. How do I stop the error message from popping up everytime I start up?
  4. Do I need UMonit64.exe? I haven't noticed any programs malfunction when I click the "close program" option when the error message pops up.
  5. If I do need it, should I download the missing DLL file to fix it? If so where would be a safe place to download the replacement dll file?
  6. Anything else I need to know to fix the issue or whether future windows updates will fix it for me and I should just ignore it for the time being.

    dang.... i been having this issue for a year now.. it wrecks havoc with my AVS video converter software too causing it to crash.

    Turns out I happen to have a Asus G750 laptop too! So stoked that you guys found the issue with the Genesys drivers... I have been at this thread for a year now, glad i checked it today again..

    well... i did all that.. i still get the MFC error box on boot..

    I have the Asus G750..

    I uninstalled all 3 updates:

    1. KB 2995388
    2. KB 3000850
    3. KB3013769

    I then downloaded the Gensys 4.5 drivers, and clicked the .exe installer on desktop, it installed with no errors. 

    I then reboot fully. The error still comes up. 

    I have now tried one more thing I read, I have copied the "ustor.dll" file in my new 4.5 driver folder to c:/windows32 and c:/WOWsys64 folders. I will reboot again and see if this works.

    i too have g750 laptop, i tried all the avail option, and it finally work for me, i think my replies are on the 6th page, but hoped it worked out for u

    I have the same problem just now!

    "changeicon MFC application has stopped working" It pop out after windows update. It's brand new computer straight out of the box, no other programs installed yet. So it's one of the Microsoft updated that cause this problem. It's not KB2984006 I don't have that one installed so it must be something else as well. 

    Any more suggestions lads?

    i had this problem, i've updated the driver for my genesys mlti-card reader and then the error disappear.

    I'm on an ASUS ROG 750JZ and had the above problem even after uninstalling the updates. I updated my card reader driver from this site:

    No more popup....(for now!)
