mfmp4srcsnk.dll crashing when .MOV file is selected

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro fully patched (clean install of Windows 8, minimal patches to then upgrade to 8.1, then installed all updates).

Whenever I select a MOV (QuickTime Video) file explorer.exe crashes out and restarts, no message box is shown, just the below entry in Event Viewer. This happens both when browsing files and when using an Open File Control in applications.

I have tried:

  • sfc /scannow
  • Several Fix It's (sorry do not recall which ones)
  • Installing VLC Media Player
  • Installing K-Lite Codecs Pack Lite
  • A lot of Google searches
  • Moving the mov file to different Locations
  • sample files from apples site - these can be selected fine
  • including sample_iPod.m4v (same codecs) works, tried changing to a m4v extension still crashes
  • Downloading the video from source again
  • Playing/highlighting on other systems: Win Vista, Win 7, Linux, Mac, Android (MX Player), Synology NAS (via Photo Station) ... all works fine

This is the info that VLC can pull about the file:

  • Model : iPhone 4S
  • Software : 6.0.1
  • Record Company : Apple

The video in question was taken on an iPhone 4S then e-mailed to me (over a year ago) and has worked on all systems I have watched it on, if I manage to hit enter quick enough then it plays fine. Unfortunately I do not know how to find another video taken on an iPhone 4S for comparison

But even if this is a slightly corrupt file it should not crash out explorer or any application which highlights that file, should it???

Any advice would be very welcome as I watch this video quite often. I cannot think of any other info to include but if you need anymore info let me know.

KB2975719 is the problem.

I went back to an image prior to September updates and installed all except KB2975719 and problem solved. All MOV files play no problem.

I don't have ClassicShell so I doubt that is the issue

I am not sure if you can remove the update but it is certainly worth a try.

    I suspect I have stumbled upon another symptom. 

    Today I sent an email with a .mov attachment (which crashes Explorer) to a Microsoft support account. The email was sent from the Windows 8.1 Mail App via my outlook.com address. 

    I noticed a little while later that the mail and calendar apps were reporting sync problems - '....outlook.com is not available'.  If I rebooted, the Calendar app could re-sync, but when I started the Mail app, it started reporting '''... is not available', and so did the calendar app.

    After leaving it some time, and nothing sorting itself out, I wondered if it was the attachment which was still in the Sent folder.  I deleted it from Sent and the Bin, and now everything is working fine again.

    The finger points .... and I do wish Microsoft would give us a clue.

    My Windows Phone can't play these .mov clips either, unless I save them to my Google Drive, and they are just short clips of my grandchildren.  Nothing big or complicated.

    It seems ironic that my workaround for viewing these Apple iPhone clips is to use a Google product running on a Microsoft platform.  Getting an iPad might be easier ..., but I would hate to add to Apple's cause.

    I'm having this problem too and this post has been great, taking ownership of the file and renaming it as recommended by some of the other posters has stopped Explrer catching.

    Fingers crossed, Microsoft will release an update soon to fix this properly.

    I just got a new iPhone so did phone Apple on this who are very aware of the issue and are apparently discussing it with Microsoft. Who knows how long that will take, but it is affecting a lot of Apple phone users so hopefully there is some pressure to release a proper fix for this

    I have two folders one on my desktop and one in pictures. When I play my videos uploaded from iPhone 4s or my Lumix Camera via the Video App or Windows Media Player 8.1, the software crashes. The iPhone videos seem a little more stable in Quicktime player but when I play through Quicktime, it plays but if I try to play another the folder crashes. Also can add a handful of videos to MovieMaker, if I add a second batch, it crashes. 

    Equally, when I try to access photos in those folders, the folder crashes. 

    Granted my folders have 50+Gb of images in there, is that the problem? 

    I have done a system refresh as thought it might be that. Transferred all files onto a harddrive and tried to play them from there, they also crash when played via harddrive. 

    When I play older videos from iPhone 4s or Lumix camera that are not stored in those particular folders I have talked about, Windows media player with play them. 

    Do you think I have the same problem as described on this thread or are my files corrupt? I am terrified that they are corrupt as they are all of my baby daughter and I don't have them anywhere else (apart from the harddrive which is also being a problem). 

    I have tried to read through this thread but find it scarily technical as I am an average computer user.

    I would be grateful of some advice. Thank you in advance.
