mfmp4srcsnk.dll crashing when .MOV file is selected

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro fully patched (clean install of Windows 8, minimal patches to then upgrade to 8.1, then installed all updates).

Whenever I select a MOV (QuickTime Video) file explorer.exe crashes out and restarts, no message box is shown, just the below entry in Event Viewer. This happens both when browsing files and when using an Open File Control in applications.

I have tried:

  • sfc /scannow
  • Several Fix It's (sorry do not recall which ones)
  • Installing VLC Media Player
  • Installing K-Lite Codecs Pack Lite
  • A lot of Google searches
  • Moving the mov file to different Locations
  • sample files from apples site - these can be selected fine
  • including sample_iPod.m4v (same codecs) works, tried changing to a m4v extension still crashes
  • Downloading the video from source again
  • Playing/highlighting on other systems: Win Vista, Win 7, Linux, Mac, Android (MX Player), Synology NAS (via Photo Station) ... all works fine

This is the info that VLC can pull about the file:

  • Model : iPhone 4S
  • Software : 6.0.1
  • Record Company : Apple

The video in question was taken on an iPhone 4S then e-mailed to me (over a year ago) and has worked on all systems I have watched it on, if I manage to hit enter quick enough then it plays fine. Unfortunately I do not know how to find another video taken on an iPhone 4S for comparison

But even if this is a slightly corrupt file it should not crash out explorer or any application which highlights that file, should it???

Any advice would be very welcome as I watch this video quite often. I cannot think of any other info to include but if you need anymore info let me know.

KB2975719 is the problem.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2975719/en-gb

I went back to an image prior to September updates and installed all except KB2975719 and problem solved. All MOV files play no problem.

I don't have ClassicShell so I doubt that is the issue

I am not sure if you can remove the update but it is certainly worth a try.

Hope it helps

    Even though I'm running W8.1 it does look like you are correct;

Anyhow, there's some aspect of KB2995388 that is still influencing the Explorer crash (by my laymen analysis of the crashdump; mfmp4srcsnk.dll was at fault). I'm not sure sure what changed but, if KB2995388 and/or KB2975719 are installed the issue remains, on my end.

Thank you for contacting support as well as the provided feedback.

THANKS for posting. My issue was that scrolling through a folder with lots of videos (copied from my iPhone) caused file explorer to crash to desktop. Removing these two updates fixed it for me - had to remove both. That's Microsoft for you.

Un-installed both the updates above and hey presto everything working fine and explorer not crashing again. Many thanks..... I notice KB2995388 is the roll up for October so maybe ust contained the other update within there?

I found this also was crashing Media Player when it was automatically updating the library when it got to my Pictures folders which contain some .MOV files. Must be when it's retrieving the video information.

Also a big note to everyone who has had this issue....KB3000850 is the rollup for November which just came up as an optional update.....I installed just to check for this issue and it does re-appear when installed so may be another which needs to be avoided/uninstalled for anyone getting this issue also.

Thanks for the resolution. I had the same problem.

Needs attention from Microsoft ASAP. The average user will not be aware of the crash even occurring as there is no error dialogue box. I had to investigate using Event Viewer to find mfmp4srcsnk.dll as the faulting module.

Yup, It's confirmed on my end; KB3000850, the big November update, has the same problem as KB2995388 and KB2975719 had.

There has been no fix, It still crashes explorer.exe with video files (.mov).

    CabbagePrince - how do you un-install KB2995388 and KB297571?  I can't figure it out.

I have renamed mfmp4srcsnk.dll to mfmp4srcsnk.dll.old, which has allowed me to access my video folders again.  But... Windows Media crashes, Movie Maker crashes and Adobe Premier crashes.  I can't edit videos at the moment at all. So it seems the renaming workaround is not going to work for me... and it could be a while until Microsoft resolve this.

    Any help appreciated.
