mfmp4srcsnk.dll crashing when .MOV file is selected

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro fully patched (clean install of Windows 8, minimal patches to then upgrade to 8.1, then installed all updates).

Whenever I select a MOV (QuickTime Video) file explorer.exe crashes out and restarts, no message box is shown, just the below entry in Event Viewer. This happens both when browsing files and when using an Open File Control in applications.

I have tried:

  • sfc /scannow
  • Several Fix It's (sorry do not recall which ones)
  • Installing VLC Media Player
  • Installing K-Lite Codecs Pack Lite
  • A lot of Google searches
  • Moving the mov file to different Locations
  • sample files from apples site - these can be selected fine
  • including sample_iPod.m4v (same codecs) works, tried changing to a m4v extension still crashes
  • Downloading the video from source again
  • Playing/highlighting on other systems: Win Vista, Win 7, Linux, Mac, Android (MX Player), Synology NAS (via Photo Station) ... all works fine

This is the info that VLC can pull about the file:

  • Model : iPhone 4S
  • Software : 6.0.1
  • Record Company : Apple

The video in question was taken on an iPhone 4S then e-mailed to me (over a year ago) and has worked on all systems I have watched it on, if I manage to hit enter quick enough then it plays fine. Unfortunately I do not know how to find another video taken on an iPhone 4S for comparison

But even if this is a slightly corrupt file it should not crash out explorer or any application which highlights that file, should it???

Any advice would be very welcome as I watch this video quite often. I cannot think of any other info to include but if you need anymore info let me know.

KB2975719 is the problem.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2975719/en-gb

I went back to an image prior to September updates and installed all except KB2975719 and problem solved. All MOV files play no problem.

I don't have ClassicShell so I doubt that is the issue

I am not sure if you can remove the update but it is certainly worth a try.

Hope it helps

I find the exact problem 2 days ago. Microsoft Live Support seems not knowing the issue or pretending not to know, she remotely accessed my PC and failed to offer any solution except offering me to join a paid support plan. I then found out today this issue has existed for a few months. I even told her I can open this particular mov file and watch it on my OneDrive account.

Like many people, I see the same problem - Windows 8.1 File Explorer crashes when it tries to retrieve the properties of a .MOV file which was created on an iPhone or similar.  There's another thread listing lots of anger at:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/bug-in-file-explorer-for-mov-files/30ce2929-8e98-490a-b762-7ec1b58405ff?auth=1&rtAction=1419093480870

But no answers are provided by Microsoft.

To add to what others have reported, here are some observations:

I have verified that .MOV files created on other devices (e.g. Panasonic Lumix camera) never cause the crashes.  I've also found that iPhone clips created on/before 19 Sep 2013 never cause a crash.  But a file created on an iPhone on 23 Feb 2014 always cause crashes.  And it's easy to predict which files will cause a crash: if File Explorer shows a proper '1st frame' icon for the file then it won't crash.  If it shows a generic Quicktime icon it will crash when properties are retrieved (hover over the icon).

I've also verified that Google's Picasa can handle old and new iPhone clips with few problems. and it shows the proper 1st frame icon.

I've also noticed it is difficult to rename a Windows folder containing 'bad clips'.  Windows says another application has the folder open, but I can't see which other application is using the folder..

It looks as though around the start of 2014 Apple changed they way they create video clips, perhaps the metadata embedded within the clip.

But it's bad that File Explorer dies when reading properties of a file it can't handle - it should show why the file can't be used and stay alive.

    A fix would be welcome!

Are there any more updates regarding this issue or should I just uninstall KB3013769?

    Thanks in advance

No you're right!!! that update does cause me issues KB3013769.....the reason why it had no install date is that Windows was waiting for me to restart to finish installing it.....now installed and same problems.....so removing and hiding this update just now......not ideal....strange how the Microsoft guys are not around anymore now it's been proved to be a problem.....can anyone escalate this anywhere?

    KB3013769 is the December rollup.

The roll up contains KB3014591, which updates the dll to version 9600.17483, but doesn't fix this bug.
