mfmp4srcsnk.dll crashing when .MOV file is selected

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro fully patched (clean install of Windows 8, minimal patches to then upgrade to 8.1, then installed all updates).

Whenever I select a MOV (QuickTime Video) file explorer.exe crashes out and restarts, no message box is shown, just the below entry in Event Viewer. This happens both when browsing files and when using an Open File Control in applications.

I have tried:

sfc /scannow
Several Fix It's (sorry do not recall which ones)
Installing VLC Media Player
Installing K-Lite Codecs Pack Lite
A lot of Google searches
Moving the mov file to different Locations
sample files from apples site - these can be selected fine
including sample_iPod.m4v (same codecs) works, tried changing to a m4v extension still crashes
Downloading the video from source again
Playing/highlighting on other systems: Win Vista, Win 7, Linux, Mac, Android (MX Player), Synology NAS (via Photo Station) ... all works fine

This is the info that VLC can pull about the file:

The video in question was taken on an iPhone 4S then e-mailed to me (over a year ago) and has worked on all systems I have watched it on, if I manage to hit enter quick enough then it plays fine. Unfortunately I do not know how to find another video taken on an iPhone 4S for comparison

But even if this is a slightly corrupt file it should not crash out explorer or any application which highlights that file, should it???

Any advice would be very welcome as I watch this video quite often. I cannot think of any other info to include but if you need anymore info let me know.

KB2975719 is the problem.

I went back to an image prior to September updates and installed all except KB2975719 and problem solved. All MOV files play no problem.

I don't have ClassicShell so I doubt that is the issue

I am not sure if you can remove the update but it is certainly worth a try.

My best guess is that we might see things resolved as Windows 10 is released, but even that I won't hold my breath for.

I occasionally run the Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926 in a VM (VirtualBox 4.3.26) just to see what it is like and Explorer does not crash opening a folder containing the iPhone movies that do crash on Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit. All is not perfect, audio doesn't work on my VM for Windows 10 (I think that this may be a known problem in the current Builds 9926 & 10041 and not anything to do with running it in a VM) and the MS Metro application that is the default for opening MOV files fails but Windows Media does play them, albeit silently. Note: this version of Windows 10 is a "Technical Preview" and I would not expect it to be error free but at least it seems to fix the underlying issue.

However, my two current solutions are to use Handbrake on either:
1. A Windows 7 VM on my Windows 8.1 laptop , or
2. An old laptop that still runs Windows 7.
to convert the MOV files to M4V/MP4 files and then use these on my Windows 8.1 laptop:

BTW - for those interested - on this build of the Technical Preview, file mfmp4srcsnk.dll has the following properties (although I personally wouldn't dream of copying it to my Windows 8.1 system as this is not the RTM version of Windows 10):

Has anyone tried reinstalling Windows?

While I have used the workaround of renaming as .old for months now, I am frustrated that I can't edit videos any longer, nor see thumbnails of the .mov files. Also, after a recent windows update, I am now have no audio (drivers are not the problem). So I planning to reinstall windows, make a copy of the relevant .dll's and then see what happens when I start updating windows.

Unfortunately I don't have any restore points to work with. But I intend on making regular restore points as I reinstall other software. While many of us are experiencing the problem, the majority of the world seems to be avoiding it, so I am thinking there must be an underlying software onflict inlvolved.

I am curious to know if anyone has attempted to resolve the problem with reinstalling windows? If so, what was the outcome?

I did a clean install on a test laptop a few week ago and it was still broken. Just did all updates in particular KBs 5719, 5388, 3769 was installed today. The 850 shows Nov 14. The vers of the 2 dlls (sys32 & wow64 are .17483.

My existing .mov file which I copied from iPhone crashes win explorer.

HOWEVER just copied another .mov file from iPhone into another folder and win explorer is OK.

So I am more confused.

Has updates fixed the problem ?

Obviously, editing and other issues may still be there.

Try installing Shark007 codec pack,

I have been using these ones for many years with Vista, 7 and 8/8.1 (all x64). They don't affect any of my audio/editing programs, games are unaffected as well.

These really are install and forget without installing all the extra rubbish that most codec packs install, they should restore all of your video thumbnails.

I have named that .dll to .old for months and I have no issues with any video thumbnails, no matter what the format.
