Windows Audio cant be started, error 1740 (0x800706cc: Endpoint is a duplicate)

Hello. I need help. I lost my audio a few days ago, and it seems weird. How did it happen? I noticed it when I experience a control panel issue. When I open it, it won't load up and it cant be closed. The volume button on the taskbar says "The Audio Service is not running." I watched a video on how to solve it. I noticed, the Multimedia Class Scheduler is not running. I started it successfully. So now I started the Windows Audio service, but a dialogue box shows up and says what is on the attachment. Hoping for your reply.

If your AVG virus vault is empty and you get the error message of “Endpoint is a duplicate" try the following steps:

Open Regedit.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AudioEndpointBuilder\Parameters.
In the right pane check the value of ServiceDll. If the value is %SystemRoot%\System32\Audiosrv.dll, it's the cause of the problem. It should be: %SystemRoot%\System32\AudioEndpointBuilder.dll.
Change the ServiceDll to it’s correct value.
Reboot your computer.

Okay so i had this problem also and here is what was up with mine. My antivirus marked it as a virus and quarantined it withouit my knowledge so all i did was go to my archives or whatever it is called (im using AVG 2014) and restored it and my sound started working again. also when it says file already exists do you want to replace it REPLACE IT. So that's what i did and now my sound works, hope this helps

I´m using Win8.1 with AVG 2015 and I had the same problem- the audio service would not start. I opened the quarantaine directory and looked for the audiosvc but I did not see it. I saw a printctrl service (under the windows / system32 directory somewhere, actually in a deep subdirectory containing OLD in the name). So at the beginning it did not loook like the right thing.

BUT then I clicked on it and a long list of registry edits appeared all of a sudden! And in this long list of registry edits I also found one for the audio service!

So I closed this window again and clicked on "restore" the printctrl service (which was marked as "suspicious behaviour" or something similar). It informed me that there are registry entries already existing and asked me if I want to restore/overwrite the values. I said overwrite for all (~10) registry entries.

After that I booted the machine and - voila - audio service re-appeared and a couple of other funny behaviours also stopped.

I was a happy user of AVG for several years, but I will switch to another anti-virus software now. I really hate AVG now, this cost me many hours to solve (and I was close to re-installing my machine, which would have costed many more hours).

This fix also fixed another issue that occurred at the same time. Before this fix, the AVG wouldn't switch on its Firewall but now it is working fine.
