Nokia Lumia 930 microphone problem

Hello.

I got an issue with my Lumia 930 that i bought today.

When i've got an incomming/outgoing call the person on the other end can't hear me, but i can hear them clearly. It works when i put the call on speaker, but i want to be able to call someone and not sharing the conversation with everyone around me.

So far i've done:

Soft reset

Hard reset

Nokia Software recovery tool

Does anyone have this issue?

Is there a fix for this or should i return it?

    Hi folks,

Had my second Lumia 930 about a week now (first one was 3 days old when it bricked itself) and I've noticed a very similar issue..

I've been testing speakerphone and Skype with my wife and she can't hear anything coming from my end, so it appears as if there's no audio for this part.

I've tried adding a voice note in OneNote, and it doesn't appear to be working at all there either. All I get is a bit of static.

Cortana, however, doesn't seem to be having any issues. It's tested fine, and it looks like it hears (and understands) me when I just speak normally from a normal, usable distance.

I believe I already have the Denim update, although if someone wants to tell me the version number I'll be happy to confirm this. I've tried soft and hard resetting the phone, and I've reset it via the Lumia Recovery Tool too. Nothing seems to have had any impact on this issue.

If I test the mic by recording some video, then I get different results depending on the scenario...

If I run the MS camera, then I don't get any audio at all except maybe some static. I can't hear my voice at all. However Lumia Camera behaves slightly differently. Using the Lumia Camera with its default settings, it is able to pick up audio but not much. I can hear my voice but it's very quiet. BUT if I change Lumia Camera's video settings to record with Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, then I get much better quality audio and at much better levels.

I have no idea what this means in terms of figuring out whether this is hardware or software related, so if anyone is able to shed any light or offer up anything else I could try, I'd appreciate it.

I suspect you don't have Denim as I *think* you only get one camera app once that's installed - the Lumia one. I may be wrong. Anyway, to check go to settings and then, near the bottom, 'extras+info' - it'll say Denim right there.

The behaviour on yours sounds like mine was pre repair. OneNote audio was static or very quiet, as was my voice if I used speaker phone. Cortana could hear me fine, but 'training' Cortana couldn't. Video on the Lumia camera app recorded the audio ok, unless I held the shutter button to record 4k video in which case - static or quiet again.

Convinced it's hardware as on the new phone, all software versions that I recorded seem to be the same, but audio is completely fixed now.

Ah, that's where they hide the info :)

Thanks for that, I've just confirmed that I do indeed have Denim. I don't know if it's of any use but just as an FYI, the MS camera doesn't actually appear in the list of apps. I accessed it by going into App Settings > Photos + Camera and changing the default camera app in there. I haven't seen another way to access the MS camera.

Thanks for the confirmation -- you've just reminded me that I tried out the whole "hold down the camera button for video" when my phone first told me I could do that, and I wondered at the time why I didn't have any audio. Now I'm wondering why I didn't investigate further when that happened. Oh well, you live and learn I guess.

I'll be calling Vodafone today... and soon I'll probably be setting up my THIRD 930 in as many weeks :(

UPDATE: I've spoken to Vodafone and a new phone should be in my hands tomorrow. Hopefully it'll be third time lucky. I'll report back once I've tested that one.

Any suggestion about what to do with this? I can't send voice messages. I suppose that is better to contact technical support :'(
