Windows 8.1 error: "thread stuck in device driver"

After installing the Windows 8.1 update without issue, every time I turn on my computer a screen appears that saying that there was an error when the last session ended, and that the issue pertains to "thread_stuck_in_device_driver". This has occurred every time for the last 6 days, and I have used system restore and Windows Update and the issue still remains. Has anyone found a solution to a similar problem?

The Dell support page offers a few things to check, but says if all else fails, replace the video card.

Maybe replacing the video card is worth it to get rid of all the headaches. 

THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER

This Blue Screen error indicates that a device driver-almost always a video card driver-is stuck waiting for something (usually a hardware operation) to happen. Most of you have probably seennv4_disp.sys associated with this Blue Screen.

  1. Ensure the video drivers are updated to the latest Dell version.
  2. The system BIOS is fully up-to-date.
  3. If both the video driver and the system BIOS are fully up-to-date, check with the manufacturer for recent driver updates.
  4. As a last resort, try exchanging the video card.

Note: Reinstalling Windows is not likely to prevent this error from reoccurring.

    I had this same exact result.  I believe it's the wireless fob used to connect with my Fitbit, but I'm not sure.  Do you have one of those in a USB port?

    Same problem with my Dell Inspiron 15R SE. 

    It went from screaming fast to error ridden and extremely sluggish after the 8.1 upgrade.

    It has affected my production for my business and needless to say I'm extremely angry.  Especially since I can't do a restore back to 8.

    Does anyone know if doing a refresh works? It came loaded with Window 8 and I don't have the disk.

    This is in reply to my comment above back in 2013.

    I did discover that I was able to restore my laptop back to factory settings/Windows 8. It works fine after doing that, so I turned off updates so it doesn't try to update to 8.1 again.

    I bought my son a Dell Inspiron last year (can't remember what version, but it wasn't the SE) and his works fine after the 8.1 update.

    I also have a Dell Inspiron 15R SE and my laptop also has the same exact problem. I'm sure this would be a great laptop if I was able to run anything but Windows on it. After many hours of trying to resolve this through multiple channels, I discovered that this is just another in a long line of regressing versions of Windows.

    Can anyone please tell me where I can buy a copy of Windows 95? Because it seems every version of Windows since that one (except XP) has just been one epic failure after another.

    And consider your self lucky because mine has been doing that ever since I installed Windows 8 when it first cam out. So only having to deal with that since 8.1 is blessing believe it or not.

    What I was told by tech at Dell was that the DELL 15R SE is not compatible with Windows 8. How Windows would not be compatible with anything but an Apple I do not know. I do know that my next purchase will be an Apple for every reason that I HATE Windows and pretty much most Microsoft products.

    So if there is anyone at Microsoft can actually tell me how to resolve this problem and not just say "We're sorry you are having problems", I would greatly appreciate it.

    As far as I'm concerned, I'm about to take my laptop and put it so far up into Microsoft that they will know what having something stuck in their "device driver" is like!!!!!
