Windows Live Mail can not copy hyperlinks from one e-mail to another.

This problem appeared when Microsoft released Windows 8.1.  Win 8.0 and 7 both worked as intended.  Microsoft promised a fix (look back up the chain of replies) but it has never materialised.  It is astonishing that the problem has not been fixed in Win 10 which they are trying to ram down everyone's throat before it is fit for purpose general release.

I don't know whether I can explain the situation any better than Hoge (Windows Script Programmer, ウィンドウズスクリプトプログラマ). Windows Live Mail makes use of Internet Explorer's libraries (.dll files) for several of its functions, including displaying HTML. Whenever the Internet Explorer devs change something in their code, it will have an effect on Windows Live Mail, but they don't take this into account at all. Usually it doesn't matter, but once in a while it does. This particular fault - the mangling of copied hyperlinks

• looks like one of those cases.

I'm now back on my own machine, and I can say that having made the registry entries that Hoge recommended. I can now paste text containing hyperlinks into a message compose window and achieve the desired result. However, the .reg file I'd created didn't do the job - I had to do it manually.

If the computer is Windows 7 32-bit (x86), then this is what it took:

1. Close down all running programs.
2. Set a restore point.
3. Type regedit into the start search box and press Enter. Give UAC consent when asked. This will open the registry editor.
4. In the left-hand pane, navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION

and click on FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION 5. Right-click in the right-hand pane and select New > DWORD. Type wlmail.exe to change the value name and press Enter. 6. Double-click on the new value name wlmail.exe to open the configuration box. Type 2AF9 into the box and click OK. 7. For my 64-bit (x64) machine, I also had to perform steps 5 and 6 at

*HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE* *Wow6432Node* Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION 8. Close down Registry Editor and reboot the computer. 9. Launch Windows Live Mail and test.

This will make Windows Live Mail render HTML properly using IE11 standards rather than IE8.  

It will be interesting to see what effect if any this has on other bugs in Windows Live Mail, like forwarding messages with embedded images ...

A Copy of the above link in a Windows Live Mail email in Windows 8.1 would just paste Windows Live Mail Stuff.

A Copy of the above link in a Windows Live Mail email in Windows 7 would paste a broken link because it would include <A style.

Only Copy shortcut copies and then pastes a link in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

I did copy a link from a web page but it had complete style code.  Only Copy shortcut worked.

I would like to run more tests, but currently do not have the time.

I applied your wlmail registry key and I am back in business with Windows Live Mail 2012.

My Live Mail quit working correctly (no clickable links when dropping a template with clickable links into the Compose Message window) the minute I installed Internet Exploder 11. I uninstalled IE11 and Live Mail went back to normal. (I hear that the same thing happens the minute you install IE10, but I skipped IE10.)

And like many others on this message thread, I'm trying to run a small business, so this has been tragic event. And where was Microsoft all this time? "On a three year coffee break." Figgers.
