Can't change lock screen on windows 8.1

I tried to change my lock screen in the photos app. First of all it took forever and finally I got a message that said can't change lock screen/make sure the file isn't damaged and try again. I tried this with five other pictures and I got the same thing each time. I then tried to change it in settings and the preview for the picture would not load at all.

HELP!!!

Well, if you're interested in debugging further, you might be able to use a tool like Process Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645) to watch file system / registry activity. Start it up, look at current state, go to the control panel and make some changes to pictures, then go back and look at what's in Process Monitor. You may be able to spot where the control panel is writing the cache.

Oh, I am sure there is some sort of caching or data files involved.  My best guess is that it would be somewhere in the users' AppData folders, unless it is binary data in the registry, too.

Too bad it's not obvious, but the behavior you discovered certainly seems to indicate a cache of some sort. Hopefully zachd or another engineer working on this code will see this thread and can use this information to make the problem less likely in the future. If we knew where the cache was, someone could write a short script that would automate the fix up for most people.

Yes, I followed the steps to the letter and still no change. I also attempted to browse to my personal pictures folder and select images from there, and still no change. In running a system scan, it appears I have file unrecoverable file corruption, so it appears a complete system rebuild is in order. /sigh

Well, it looks like filesystem corruption on your system is the reason for the solution not working for you.  That is unfortunate.  Do you by chance dual-boot with Ubuntu or with any Ubuntu derivative (Kubuntu, Lubuntu, LinuxMint, etc.)? I will never use any of these again because all my NTFS partitions were corrupted by LinuxMint 13 (based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, if I recall correctly), requiring a complete rebuild from system image.

If it is in the registry, it is not in any human-readable format.  I have searched for pictures I have used and the registry comes up empty, so far as human-readable text is concerned.
