Windows XP Home SP3 Cant boot into safe mode from a crash Sony laptop VGN-A790

I get to the window that shows safe mode safe mode with networking, and last good configuration none of which works. If I choose safe mode, I get a black screen with a long list, such as multi(0) disk(0)  rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\compbatt.sys and about 50 others.

I am not sure if this happened because I updated java plug in later reading with xp it should be uninstalled, since there is no longer support for xp. The only recovery disc I have is for xp pro sp 2, but I need to get one that is xp home with sp3. XP home came installed on the laptop at purchase, and has since been updated to sp3. Is there a way to create a bootable disc using sp3 from a computer using windows 7, I have borrowed from a friend for 48 hours.

The only other disc I have is the one that sets it back to factory settings supplied by Sony, but can't do that, since I will loose files. The disc wont do it anyway since I have ie7 or 8 and SP3 is installed.  I have tried F8 multiple times with no luck, however I am using a wireless keyboard, although the arrow keys work to choose safe mode, after that,  I can't get past the long list (example above), and leaving it idle at the screen with the list sends it back into a recycle of reboot. Choosing anything else in the list does nothing including last good config. I have no known way of seeing a blue screen.

I have no backup of files and can't loose 10 years of work, etc. I had  a similar issue once before when my hard drive died about 3 years ago, but since have replaced the hard drive, and files were transferred using Ubuntu. I could download ubuntu to a USB drive that is bootable and try that I just don't recall from the last time if I left that option available in the bios for future issues in case I needed it but I think I did, if there is a way that I can fix it using Ubuntu? I won't be replacing this computer until November, so I need to get it back working again, any help or suggestions will be much appreciated as I was in the middle of a job.

    Are you sure SP1 is on the disk?  Check the file paths and directories' names

    You do not want to slipstream SP2 just SP3. 

    I recommend to start over and follow the steps in this document. Use AutoStreamer to complete the process.

    Edit:

    This can happen for any number of reasons. You may've run out of disk space,

    or one or more of the files may be corrupt. Try the process again; if you

    see the error again, you may not be able to slipstream your SP2 CD.

    I'm able to extract the sp2 but when I go to combine it with the xp oem cd I get an error on the command line.

    sp2 folder with sp2 cabinet I placed in the c drive, files from my xp home disk I placed in a folder named xp and placed in the c drive just as instructions said to do.  the xpcd folder is empty I was going to put it all in there when complete

    This is from the site and you can see alot of info before the last 3 lines which are the instructions. None of that appears when I type the instructions, I hope that is not a bad sign.

    Instructions say type what I have below on the command line, **notice there is only enter at the end.**This is incorrect there should be an enter after each line, like in the 2nd step.

    cd \cd sp2xpsp2.exe -x:c:\sp2 [ENTER]

    I get a window that extraction is complete. Then the instructions say to click ok and follow these instructions:  I enter the first line and press enter. No problems, I enter the 2nd line and press enter no problems.

    cd i386 [ENTER] cd update [ENTER] update -s**:c:\xp** [ENTER]

    After I hit enter for the 3rd time the screen looks like this and adds the extra line at the end. 

    Ignore the first line after c: I tried that first since there was only one enter command.

    I corrected it below that, which is the first set of commands where the instructions forgot about the enter 3 times not 1, then comes the 2nd set of commands, total of 6 lines, the 7th line is done by the computer, not me.

    after I hit enter on the 2nd to last line (in the image above), the last line appears and  I get this pop up

    I tried this twice and both times got this error. Why does b say that the files could be in ia64, I have a 32bit machine not 64, or nec98 directory?? When it says must reside in i386 is that referring to the i386 in my OEM disk folder, or the i386 sp2 folder. Or does all of this justmean I can't use an OEM disk?

    I did extract sp3 also, and I think it was strange that the directions never stated where the files would go after they were combined, or that there was no mention of creating a folder for the files to be sent to, which is why i made the xpcd folder to begin with.

    Now I will try to find & extract the hot fixes, and maybe try imgburn and or nLite and see if I can combine them that way. Unless you know why I got the error above, I guess I will have to buy a new xp disk.

    If system crashed when you put in the disk try unplugging anything you don't need attached to the computer.  Change auto play settings to view files because you do not want it to run the oem cd you just want to get to the files.

    just having my disk, in the windows 7 computer to try and make the disk, sounds crazy but it crashed, and didn't click on anything on the cd. I was able choose boot normally after taking the disk out of the drive and that worked. Don't know if it was my disk, or the different downloads including software to make the disk.

    When I choose safemode, i get a black screen with a bunch of lines of code flashing on the screen that ends in mup.sys   this was a response from my original post,****

    When the last thing you see on the screen in Safe mode is mup.sys, lots of folks think the problem is with mup.sys and go to great lengths to try to replace it but that is not the problem at all - mup.sys has already loaded and the problem is what comes after mup.sys.

    In Safe Mode after mup.sys loads, that is when XP checks the dirty bit on the volume and if a chkdsk needs to run, it is going to run and you will not see anything else on your screen - probably for a long time.  The system will appear that it is hung or stuck on mup.sys (but XP has already gone past that) and the chkdsk is probably running.

    Problem is after the 5 min hang it reboots, and I can't use F8

    I think I should 1st try and get sp2 on before sp3. I will try the links you supplied at least the one for making sp3 I already had but was going to follow the directions for making the sp2 first of the same site, before doing sp3 that is where i read can't use OEM.

    You're not installing anything on the Windows 7 laptop.  You're just using it to perform the slipstream operation (creating files to burn).  It will not cause a problem.

    A Windows XP Home or Professional with SP2 Setup CD. It's possible that an original XP Setup CD or an XP with SP1 Setup CD will work, but I've only tested XP with SP2, both retail and volume license versions of the CD. (You may have luck with OEM CDs from PC makers as well, depending how much the company changed the disc layout.) Full or Upgrade CDs work just fine. Previously splipstreamed discs are fine as well. But I've only tested this with versions of XP that include just a single Setup CD: Media Center and Tablet PC users are out of luck.

    The rom you have is a Recovery rom for the unit.  It's what you can use to slipstream.

    Are you able to enter Safe Mode Command Prompt on the Windows XP system?  Type the command and press enter.

    bootrec.exe/fixMbr
