thanks for the advice sir leefrost. btw mine is a win7 32bit & 4gb ram not 64bit.

"For  W7 in brief:

min size = RAM + 300mb = 3372mb (for 4GB of ram)

Max size = RAM x 3 = 9216mb (for 4GB of ram)"

That info. applies to the paging file of both 32bit or 64bit W7.

Erwin

When you have your C partition on a conventional fixed hard drive ( drive other than a solid state drive) and you use a Windows managed page file, it creates a situation where fragmentation occurs more quickly. The pagefile gets scattered all over the disk. If file fragments between scattered parts of the pagefile are removed the next file to be written, if it is of any size, is immediately in a fragmented state. This is because the available free disk space is fragmented. Using a third party defragmenter like Defraggler you can defragment free disk space.

I agree with Gerry...using a 3rd party defragmenter is a very good idea, especially because you only have 4GB RAM.

"what is the best page file size for my PC?"

The final word on understanding the paging file and it's size belong to this well know Microsoft fellow and expert Mark Russinovich.

Read his explanation of the paging file by clicking the link and after he has explained it's use and how it works, he finally has something to say on some of  the common advice given on setting it's size:

How Big Should I Make the Paging File?

"Perhaps one of the most commonly asked questions related to virtual memory is, how big should I make the paging file? There’s no end of ridiculous advice out on the web and in the newsstand magazines that cover Windows, and even Microsoft has published misleading recommendations. Almost all the suggestions are based on multiplying RAM size by some factor, with common values being 1.2, 1.5 and 2. Now that you understand the role that the paging file plays in defining a system’s commit limit and how processes contribute to the commit charge, you’re well positioned to see how useless such formulas truly are".

thank you very much sir Gerry for the advice. btw what do you mean by your reply to leefrost, that "system managed" is not advisable?..because when i checked mine for the first time it is already set system managed and never touched or changed it. if not, then what is the best page file size for my PC?
