Your viewpoint is a common one. However I strongly disagree.
Me too, it's well know general advice that has been way outdated since XP and later operating systems.
Even back then, you needed to know what your max. ram usage could be for any one particular computer. Something most PC users didn't know and the advice often caused computer crashes when the OS ran out of paging file, due to the limits imposed on it by
the user : )
"System managed" is the way to go nowadays.
