I remember I installed Avast Free 2014, then maybe afterwards it caused my apps to show those arrow down signs and not be 'live'. Is it really because of Avast Antivirus?

I had installed Windows 8.1 and had this problem.
Simply uninstalled and then re-installed each one and now the problem is gone.
THIS is the solution to the problem.
You have to manually delete and reinstall each and every app that doesnt't update on its own. Only Microsoft apps show this problem, all the other ones do not need to be reinstalled.
Please note that this problem is NOT related, in any way, with Avast.
Having the same issue even after refreshing uninstalling and reinstalling fixes it until I oen the app then they become static and wont refresh
I'm sorry, for most of us this made the trick... :-\ try making a registry clean, reboot and uninstall/reinstall again. I wouldn't know what else to do :-\

"Works perfectly" is hardly how I would describe the flawed operation of Windows 8. This is supposed to be the flagship feature and it's horribly broken! Apalling job, Microsoft. But thanks everyone for clarifying the clunky solution.
