Hello,
I remember I installed Avast Free 2014, then maybe afterwards it caused my apps to show those arrow down signs and not be 'live'. Is it really because of Avast Antivirus?
The Apps Troubleshooter cannot help me.

I had installed Windows 8.1 and had this problem.
Simply uninstalled and then re-installed each one and now the problem is gone.
THIS is the solution to the problem.
You have to manually delete and reinstall each and every app that doesnt't update on its own. Only Microsoft apps show this problem, all the other ones do not need to be reinstalled.
Please note that this problem is NOT related, in any way, with Avast.

I posted another reply today but my issue is, the internet does not work at all after Avast made me update to Avast 2014.
I've updated my RealTek drivers, uninstalled Avast, there is an issue with Avast 2014+ Win8
My CPU is a Asus G72 laptop.

I never had the device prior to 8.1 being installed. I installed the apps AFTER the 8.1 upgrade. I get periodic tile updates but then they go into non-update mode - can't tell what scenario causes them to go dark. No down arrows.
Right now... News, Finance Weather, Sports, Mail, and Flipbpoard are all updating. Facebook and Twitter are not. Facebook was updating earlier today.
All programs are allowed via Windows Defender.
Periodiocally, if I unpin and repin the apps, they start to work, but then stop.
How does one re-install them if the Store app doesn't work?
I have the exact same problem. I don't have any little pictures on my tiles, but when I click on a tile (that isn't also on my desktop), the tiles just go to a blank screen. For me this screen is green because my background is green.
I was reading that everyone said "trying uninstalling the tiles" but my app store tile also didn't work, so I tried something off a limb.
Go to the top right corner of your screen and slide it downwards, to have the menu appear. Then, click on search, and type in an app that you do not currently have on your computer. It will search for it through the app store app, which kinda activated mine.
From there, i started unstalling and re-installing apps.
On the other note, i myself still need some assistance. Everyone is talking about Avast having this problem but i don't have avast, and that's not the only category of people experiencing this. On some of the apps that i tried to redownload, i get "Error 0x80070002" and some apps start to fail the download. I currently can't re-install NETFLIX due to this error. If anyone knows what this error is and/or knows how to fix it, i would appreciate it greatly.
