Windows 8.1 installation error 0x80004005

In addition to my previous entry:

Ran the W8.1 download assistant.

All hardware OK. Deleted 4 programs as suggested.

Reran installation.

Still getting Error Code 0x80004005 at end of installation.

Same here. I also unplugged my external USB drive, and both my extra internal drives leaving only the C:/ drive. At this point it's a motherboard, ram/cpu, graphics card, mouse and keyboard. All drivers are up to date. Latest firmware on ssd drive. Even plugged in a PS2 mouse instaerd of usb, Nothing's working. I was going to do a clean install but looks like others have tried that with no luck either. Worked like a charm on my laptop but I'm not sure what else I can do on this desktop. It gets to 68% or 71% and then halts itself to restore my previous windows.

 

If the MS engineers want any log files/etc... let us know. This is Win 8 Pro 64 bit desktop not RT.

Hi Karthik,.  Further to my earlier post. I dumped the setuperr.log file after my latest failed attempt to install 8.1.  The first few lines are as follows:

I have the same issue and went to  far as to perform a clean install of Windows 8, apply all available Windows Updates and then tried to update to Windows 8.1 from the Store and am having this same issue in the same way I was having it before the clean install of Windows 8.

Something is definitely up. Help!

UPDATE: got desperate and backed up all my data externally and wiped my hard drive of all partitions and installed Windows 8 Pro. I installed no additional software or drivers of any kind. I installed all available Windows Updates and then tried the upgrade to Windows 8.1 in the Windows Store.

It downloaded, proceeded to Applying Changes > Checking Compatibility > Gathering info > Preparing to restart and then:

ERROR 0x80004005; install cancelled.

I tried the install again and it failed with the same error.

I then turned off Windows Defender and Windows Firewall and tried the install again and it failed again with the same error.

I then put my computer in the DMZ on my router and tried the install again and it failed again with the same error.

I then did a little hunting and found that in the file C:$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log the following lines are near the end of the log:

I am running on an MSI motherboard 990FXA-GD80V2 with four 1TB hard drives striped into a RAID 5 (which results in 3TB useable). Before the installation of Windows 8 Pro, the drive had no partitions. The Windows 8 Pro installer partitioned and formatted the drive.
