Windows 8.1 installation error 0x80004005

I tried to update my Win8 Pro via the Win8 Store and it downloaded, proceeded to Applying Changes > Gathering info > Preparing to restart

and than : error 0x80004005; install cancelled.

No explanation why it did not do the restart. I tried it several times because initially I started everything while continuing work in a desktop application. Than I tried it with a restart w/o desktop. Same result.

So I am stuck with Win8 until there is a solution that does not require a clean install where I have to re-install all my software again. No way...

Well, here I am trying to update from Windows 7 (Which I love by the way) and I am having these same problems,

I have now tried 11 times to install Windows 10 Pro, every time it crashes when it says it is going to reboot.  It then goes back to Windows 7 with a message "Unknown error".

Looking at my Events Viewer, I get a different error each time, as follows...

error 0x80004005: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586.

error 0xc1900208: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586

error 0x80004005: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

error 0xc1900208: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

error 0x80004005: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

error 0xc1900208: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

error 0x80004005: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

error 0xc1900208: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

error 0xc1900204: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

error 0xc1900204: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

error 0x80240055: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

    There appear to be 4 error codes appearing, 0x80004005 ,  0xc1900208,  0xc1900204 and 0x80240055.

So I am off to other threads to investigate these other errors.

I have done the full clean start before trying to install as well as a lot of other things.

I have just run Slim Cleaner so I will retry now, having done that and I will advise on my success , or lack of it.

I will look through the other error code threads first to see if I can find any other gems.  If I find anything that works, I will let you know.

    Good luck

    Hi,

maybe you should incude fix mbr processes like this:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8\_1-windows\_install/windows-81-installation-error-0x80004005/ed8481b4-b7f2-49ea-80c1-7c7fdcafe41e?page=8

    to your list of procedures?

For me it only worked to fix the UEFI boot as recommended here:  (please be careful this is for advanced users and can cause serious problems with your machine) : https://neosmart.net/wiki/fix-uefi-boot/#Fix_1_Use

[watch out there seems to be an error in step 28: when it says "/s x:" I think the x: should be replaced with the letter of the system partition.]

Also I wonder if disabling the AV software is actually enough, or if it might help some people to disinstall them temporarily - including running the official removal software of the regarding AV company.

Finally I think there might be a point in recommending to turn on -  also temporarily if preferred - Windows automatic error reporting and customer experience improvement program. To me it looked as if there were less errors in the setuperr file, after I did so...
