Windows 8.1 installation error 0x80004005

I tried to update my Win8 Pro via the Win8 Store and it downloaded, proceeded to Applying Changes > Gathering info > Preparing to restart

and than : error 0x80004005; install cancelled.

No explanation why it did not do the restart. I tried it several times because initially I started everything while continuing work in a desktop application. Than I tried it with a restart w/o desktop. Same result.

So I am stuck with Win8 until there is a solution that does not require a clean install where I have to re-install all my software again. No way...

    This does not work for me either.  FYI I have a Sony Laptop.  Is this issue particular to laptops?  Is there anyway I can be sent the upgrade on DVD/CD?  How do I go about this? 

    The issue is very frustrating

    This thread should probably be closed out since the problem has been identified and the ONLY solution for the majority of situations is to rebuild the laptop with the original version of either Windows 7 or Windows 8 and then install the 8.1 Upgrade. If you do not do this you will never get the 8.1 Upgrade installed. Believe me, nothing else works!

    Agree. I did precisely that just because I might want to upgrade at some time to W10. Fortunately, I found my Windows OEM key at the back of my HP Pavillion Elite pc's case.

    Hello,

    I have the same problem but in another context.I try to delete a folder in My Videos full of youtube videos but it gives me that error.

    What can I do?

    For several month I was unable to perform the Update to Windows 8.1 but with the Clean Boot, it finaly worked.
