Windows 8.1 installation error 0x80004005

I tried to update my Win8 Pro via the Win8 Store and it downloaded, proceeded to Applying Changes > Gathering info > Preparing to restart

and than : error 0x80004005; install cancelled.

No explanation why it did not do the restart. I tried it several times because initially I started everything while continuing work in a desktop application. Than I tried it with a restart w/o desktop. Same result.

So I am stuck with Win8 until there is a solution that does not require a clean install where I have to re-install all my software again. No way...

Yes, sadly I think you are into a reinstall.  As a final try you might check out the link below and see if overwriting the PID file helps, maybe the 8.1 update checks that and not the EUFI.  Good luck.

Can you elaborate a bit on this solution? Since I am downloading the 8.1 update from the Store, where would I find this PID file?

If you scan down the text brought up by the link I attached it says where to find the file with the PID in it. It's a long shot but worth a try.

The example shows the file in the "sources" folder on a DVD? In my case, I don't have a DVD (downloading from the store) so how am I supposed to write the file to a DVD? Are you suggesting I download a Win 8.1 installation disk?

    This is astounding.

MICROSOFT, THIS ISSUE IS NOW 9 MONTHS OLD AT LEAST IN THIS FORUM. I HAVE TRIED TO UPDATE AGAIN AND STILL THE SAME 80004005 ERROR.,

    .

EVERYONE OF THESE USERS SEEMS TO SAY THE SAME THING........

-WE DO NOT WANT TO DO A CLEAN INSTALL AS PER WIN95 ERA MACHINES. THIS IS AN OLD FASHIONED OUTDATED WAY OF DOING STUFF.

-MICROSOFT SUPPORT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE. IN FACT, MS IS NOT ADDRESSING IT.

-YOU WANT US TO USE YOUR PRODUCT BUT YOU DON'T HELP US.

-THE USERS OF THIS FORUM ARE NOT DUMB. THEY HAVE TRIED MANY APPROACHES WITH NO SUCCESS.

-YOUR SILENCE IS DEAFENING......AND WE ARE SICK OF IT.

    .

    I used MS hints 2 months ago...I re-tried again today...same rubbish.

Linux is starting to look attractive, Google is looking attractive........

WHEN WILL MS ACTUALLY TAKE SOME NOTICE OF THIS???????
