Windows 8.1 installation error 0x80004005

I tried to update my Win8 Pro via the Win8 Store and it downloaded, proceeded to Applying Changes > Gathering info > Preparing to restart

and than : error 0x80004005; install cancelled.

No explanation why it did not do the restart. I tried it several times because initially I started everything while continuing work in a desktop application. Than I tried it with a restart w/o desktop. Same result.

So I am stuck with Win8 until there is a solution that does not require a clean install where I have to re-install all my software again. No way...

    Your Odyssey almost made me cry, honest. These are the things that make us all, enthusiasts soldiers of the quest of the unknown. I'm sooooo glad you finally succeeded with your puzzle, a fine courtesy of MS. In my case I'm encountering always error 0x30018 while finishing the 8.1 installation with the ISO disc.... and another gift from MS named 0x8024200D when trying the update from their store. I tried myriad of attempts with same number of "combination" workarounds to no avail.... Now I got enough with this theme, no more.  MICROSOFT, open your eyes to see what you have done and come up with a FIX right now!

    And my attempt to create a ISO with the modified Key as displayed by JellyBean luckly failed on typing in the key - Not acceptable by the system!

    So much for that theory!

    Seems there is a MS event here in RSA and eveyone is so excited about what they are being told - pity they don't demo a 8.1 upgrade that gets stuck!

    Ok, the same here in Prague. I could upgrade my notebook successfully, but the update still fails with 80004005 on my desktop PC. I dual boot between XP and 8, BCD being on the XP disk. I tried all the suggestions here including moving BCD to the Win8 disk and disconnect all other disks, so that there was just one single bootable Win8 disk in my PC. I spent several hours poking around with no luck. Still getting the same error. I think there is still no general guideline how to avoid this error, right? No of the suggestions here seem to help me out.

    Wonder if I "Refresh" my Windows 8 on this PC????  Was thinking that there might be some stuff I run that modifies Win 8 such as Stardock's Start8 BUT I have that on the other 2 systems as well...

    And will "refresh" work as it does not like any of the originals Keys I bought last October....

    So stop wasting time and continue with 2 x 8.1 and 1 x 8.0 till some miracle happens?

    Exactly the same here. Update to 8.1 aborts with 0x80004005 even when using the ISO. Also noticed that I am unable to refresh my current 8.0 from the boot disk. Invested so much time to follow all the paths to solve this, but I am not yet willing to setup a clean 8.1 System. @ Microsoft, do you have any diagnostic tool that can be used the get the root cause of this ? Thanks
