This thread should probably be closed out since the problem has been identified and the ONLY solution for the majority of situations is to rebuild the laptop with the original version of either Windows 7 or Windows 8 and then install the 8.1 Upgrade. If you do not do this you will never get the 8.1 Upgrade installed. Believe me, nothing else works!
Windows 8.1 installation error 0x80004005
I tried to update my Win8 Pro via the Win8 Store and it downloaded, proceeded to Applying Changes > Gathering info > Preparing to restart
and than : error 0x80004005; install cancelled.
No explanation why it did not do the restart. I tried it several times because initially I started everything while continuing work in a desktop application. Than I tried it with a restart w/o desktop. Same result.
So I am stuck with Win8 until there is a solution that does not require a clean install where I have to re-install all my software again. No way...

2015-02-16T11:56:52+00:00 This does not work for me either. FYI I have a Sony Laptop. Is this issue particular to laptops? Is there anyway I can be sent the upgrade on DVD/CD? How do I go about this?
The issue is very frustrating

2015-01-23T06:21:18+00:00 This is a very good post and reminder.
I too have read about the potential upgrade path ONLY from Windows 8.1, and no reference to Windows 8. Through no error on our part, and perhaps because of UEFI bios issues, or whatever, we are stuck i n an unenviable position and hampered by MS inability to help its customers.
I have just bought 2 Apple units for school for my kids, as THEY preferenced these over MS products. That is shouting loudly about the future of MS computing and today's generations.
Take note MS, I still like your system, but am now forced to learn Apple software to help my kids. Perhaps I am a fossil to your product and you need to take note.

2015-01-23T00:47:36+00:00 Hello,
Just making you aware that it has been over a year now and we are all still stuck on Windows 8 with no way to get onto 8.1.
This is made more infuriating with the new release of Windows 10 Insider Preview. I have signed up for this but the site will not allow me to install anything (presumably) because I have Windows 8 and not 8.1.
We all want to use your services, create new applications for you and offer you advice on your current developments but first you have to allow us to actually use your software.
Please make sure this gets seen to as soon as possible; we've waited long enough.
