Windows 8.1 installation error 0x80004005

I tried to update my Win8 Pro via the Win8 Store and it downloaded, proceeded to Applying Changes > Gathering info > Preparing to restart

and than : error 0x80004005; install cancelled.

No explanation why it did not do the restart. I tried it several times because initially I started everything while continuing work in a desktop application. Than I tried it with a restart w/o desktop. Same result.

So I am stuck with Win8 until there is a solution that does not require a clean install where I have to re-install all my software again. No way...

    OK I finally got the Win 8.1 App to install..  I dual boot between win7 and Win 8, with Win7 being the master boot disk.  Apparently, the Win 8.1 upgrade App doesn't like this.  I found a steer to my fix on the link below, for which I will be eternally grateful.  In summary, your Win8 partition must be Active and the main boot partition..  I disconnected my Win7 disk and a supplementary data disk and the installation worked like a charm.  The setuperr.log gives no useful information related to this problem.  Hopefully some of you will find this useful.

    So after all that it is till not updating!

    I also spent a few days with the 7 to 8 upgrade when 8 was released without much luck!

    This time I am sitting and waiting till MS or someone on the Forum finds the solution!

    Can you imagine the millions of man-days that is being wasted around the globe?

    Luckely the failure fails back to a runable Windows 8 machine but still, very poor show indeed!

    Patience seems to be a virtue!

    I have the same issue and went to  far as to perform a clean install of Windows 8, apply all available Windows Updates and then tried to update to Windows 8.1 from the Store and am having this same issue in the same way I was having it before the clean install of Windows 8.

     

    Something is definitely up. Help!

    UPDATE: got desperate and backed up all my data externally and wiped my hard drive of all partitions and installed Windows 8 Pro. I installed no additional software or drivers of any kind. I installed all available Windows Updates and then tried the upgrade to Windows 8.1 in the Windows Store.

    It downloaded, proceeded to Applying Changes > Checking Compatibility > Gathering info > Preparing to restart and then:

    ERROR 0x80004005; install cancelled.

    I tried the install again and it failed with the same error.

    I then turned off Windows Defender and Windows Firewall and tried the install again and it failed again with the same error.

    I then put my computer in the DMZ on my router and tried the install again and it failed again with the same error.

    I then did a little hunting and found that in the file C:$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log the following lines are near the end of the log:

    2013-10-21 03:48:36, Error      [0x064200] IBSLIB ReadBootCode: Invalid Sector Size!

    2013-10-21 03:48:36, Error      [0x06411c] IBSLIB UpdateBootCode: ReadBootCode failed!

    2013-10-21 03:48:36, Error                 SP     CUpdateBootSector::DoExecute: Failed to update the boot sector. Error code is [0x80004005]

    2013-10-21 03:48:37, Error                 SP     Operation failed: Update Boot Sector. Error: 0x80004005[gle=0x000000b7]

    I am running on an MSI motherboard 990FXA-GD80V2 with four 1TB hard drives striped into a RAID 5 (which results in 3TB useable). Before the installation of Windows 8 Pro, the drive had no partitions. The Windows 8 Pro installer partitioned and formatted the drive.

    Hi Karthik,.  Further to my earlier post. I dumped the setuperr.log file after my latest failed attempt to install 8.1.  The first few lines are as follows:
