Windows 8.1 installation error 0x80004005

I tried to update my Win8 Pro via the Win8 Store and it downloaded, proceeded to Applying Changes > Gathering info > Preparing to restart

and than : error 0x80004005; install cancelled.

No explanation why it did not do the restart. I tried it several times because initially I started everything while continuing work in a desktop application. Than I tried it with a restart w/o desktop. Same result.

So I am stuck with Win8 until there is a solution that does not require a clean install where I have to re-install all my software again. No way...

    And my attempt to create a ISO with the modified Key as displayed by JellyBean luckly failed on typing in the key - Not acceptable by the system!

    So much for that theory!

    Seems there is a MS event here in RSA and eveyone is so excited about what they are being told - pity they don't demo a 8.1 upgrade that gets stuck!

    Your Odyssey almost made me cry, honest. These are the things that make us all, enthusiasts soldiers of the quest of the unknown. I'm sooooo glad you finally succeeded with your puzzle, a fine courtesy of MS. In my case I'm encountering always error 0x30018 while finishing the 8.1 installation with the ISO disc.... and another gift from MS named 0x8024200D when trying the update from their store. I tried myriad of attempts with same number of "combination" workarounds to no avail.... Now I got enough with this theme, no more.  MICROSOFT, open your eyes to see what you have done and come up with a FIX right now!

    I just Jellybeaned my Laptop and same game!  The CD Key is slightly modified to the original key!

    Original   Key 8H7HC-QC32D-----     - W8CKV

    Jellybean Key V8H7H-CQC32-D------- W8CKV  !!!!

    Let me try and create an ISO with the "New" Key.....

    Just a quick update.

    I ended up giving up on updating my W8 without having to reinstall everything, and followed the steps found in this website (link), so that I could:

    • Download the Windows 8.1 ISO file (see first link)
    • Burn it to a DVD/USB drive using W7 ISO tool
    • Make a clean install of Windows 8.1 using the default key in the first link
    • Activate it with my original W8 key (simply go to "settings" in metro interface, and you'll see "Activate Windows", then enter your original key)

    So far so good, and I ended up taking less time to reinstall everything that the time I had already used trying to fix the update process.

    for the record, there were a LOT of line breaks in there. I had no idea this thing would cram everything together. sorry. it was a lot easier to read all broken up the way I typed it. it was even funnier. oh well. imagine it that way...better, younger, more fabulous. nite nite.
