Original Title: Windows 7 Updates Fail

The updates for Microsoft Security Essentials install successfully.  The Security updates and the updates for Windows 7 fail.  I have tried many of the recommendations after reading the discussions.  No network problems have been noted; Fixit finds no problems to be fixed.  I tried the Win update problem detection troubleshooter.  It fixed a few issues but these remain unfixed:  Win Update error ox80070057 (2014-04-06-T-03_27_14p); Problems installing recent updates.  I would appreciate additional suggestions.  Thank you.

I would like to try an in place upgrade.  However, I do not have and have never had a Windows 7 DVD.  Any other suggestion at this point?  Thank you.

On reflection an In place Upgrade is not feasible with your Inspiron N5110. Your operating system is damaged. To eliminate the problems on your computer you need to restore to factory settings and rebuild your computer system. Please refer to the section entitled Restoring your Operating System in your Inspiron Setup Guide. Page 72 covers a Sell Factory Image Restore:

    ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-15r-n5110_Setup%20Guide_en-us.pdf

    This caution is most important:

    CAUTION: Using Dell Factory Image

Restore to restore your operating system permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any programs or drivers installed after you received your computer. If possible, back up the data before using this option. Use Dell Factory Image Restore only if System Restore did not resolve your operating system problem.

NOTE:Dell Factory Image Restore may not be available in certain countries or on certain computers.

NOTE:If Dell Factory Image Restore is not available on your computer, use Dell DataSafe Local Backup (see “Dell DataSafe Local Backup” on page 68) to restore your operating system.

Use Dell Factory Image Restore only as the last method to restore your operating system.

This option restores your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer. Any programs or files added since you received your computer—including data files—are permanently deleted from the hard drive. Data files include documents, spreadsheets, e-mail messages, digital photos, music files, and so on. If possible, back up all data before using Dell Factory Image Restore. Starting Dell Factory Image Restore.

Instructions on how to carry out a Restore to Factory setting are in the link after the Caution.

When you have restored to factory settings you should set up an internet connection, install anti-virus software, update all drivers from the Dell web site and install all Windows Updates. Run Disk CleanUp and defragment at intervals.

You should then be in a position to reinstall programmes. With that in mind make a list of programmes to be installed and check that you have the means to do it. Check that you have the necessary information to recreate your internet connection on the new system. Make a list of what you need to do and the order in which you intend to do each task. This will help you considerably when you carry out the operation. If you have a second computer available when you rebuild your computer system, this can help if you hit a problem and need to check online.

    Gerry -

This is not the response I was hoping for, but I will proceed with planning to restore my operating system to factory settings.  It will take awhile, and I will report the results.  In the meantime, thank you for your extraordinary support during this period.

I've been having the exact same issues with 7 home premium SP1 since the update for KB2600217 failed on 7/11/2015.

I retrying all the fixes above again but IMO I think MS is forcing us into 10

FYI - MS safety scanner page does not load in Firefox 40.00.2 and had to run it in IE 11.09. I I gave up on IE once I figured out every web site I go to looks better in FireFox

My work PC with 8.0 has had 10 ready to download  for about 2 weeks but my home laptop with 7 which I scheduled 3 weeks before the 8.0 pc is still waiting.

I've been using Microsoft since DOS 1.0 and still have the floppies to prove it
