Windows 8.1 Update is not appearing in the Windows Store

If you do not see the Windows 8.1 update in the Windows Store, here are some of the reasons.  You can find more details here on why you may not be seeing the Windows 8.1 update.

  1.  You may be running an edition of Windows 8 that doesn’t support the update from the Store.

   a. If you’re running Windows 8.1 Preview, here’s how to update to the final version.

   b. If you’re running Windows Enterprise Edition or Volume License version of Windows Pro.  You must speak to your system administer to learn how to update. 

If you are not sure, the following steps will help you identify if you have a Volume License version of Windows:

  • Open the run dialog box by using the Windows Key + R
  • Type the following and press enter   slmgr.vbs /dli
  • You will see a window titled Windows Script Host.
  • On the first line you should see either “RETAIL channel” or “Volume Channel”

If it says something that resembles Volume, you won’t be able to get it through the store and will need to talk to your system administrator about their plans for rolling out this update based on the Volume License agreement through the

Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC).  If you are the system administrator or the person responsible for your company’s computers, you should refer to this article for information on how to upgrade. 

  c. If you’re using a Multiple Activation Product Key through a Commercial or MSDN contact.   To install the update, you need to use media obtained through those programs.

  1. You have not installed all pending Windows Updates.  You can find details here on which update is needed to see the Windows 8.1 update.

You may also attempt an automated fix by running the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. You need to sync your App License; you can do this by:
  • On the Start screen, tap or click Store to open the Windows Store.
  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

  • Tap or click App updates
  • Tap or click Sync licenses
  1. The Windows Store Catalog is not refreshing correctly. 

To refresh the catalog, try pressing the Windows and R key together to open the run box, type WSReset.exe and hit Enter.  Reboot and check the Windows Store again.

Microsoft has released a troubleshooter to help find problems that may prevent you from updating to Windows 8.1.

    Hi all. This is my first post so bear with me guys. Im a newbie!! :-)

    I updated to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 last week from the Store. I noticed for a few days afterwards that the Update Free to Windows 8.1 tile was still showing on the opening screen when I browsed the Store even though I'd already installed the update. Does that large Windows 8.1 Free update tile get removed from the Store after a while when you have updated to 8.1?

    I notice now that it is no longer there. Everything seems to be OK and working properly so Im wondering if the Update to Windows 8.1 free tile disappearing is normal behaviour after you've installed it?

    First a big welcome to the community.

    As far as your question goes, in regards to the

    Yes, this is by design and is normal practice.

    To confirm that your update has totally completed, please go to your Desktop and Hoover over the Start Button located at the bottom left of your Taskbar, right click to select System from the list, at the top of the Window it will display what Operating System is installed and should confirm Windows 8.1  with or without (Pro + Media Centre) depending on your purchase. (Windows 8.1 is free, for the Pro and Media Centre these are chargeable extra add-ons.) Alternatively, you can also confirm the same settings from your Start Screen by just beginning to type the word System, suggest you the pull down arrow at the top of the Search Pane that will open to change the search from Everywhere to Settings to make it easier for you to locate in the list. Also, please do not forget to also check within the main Windows Update section for other NEW updates that are now available and install them, then Restart. Please also check for your Hardware drivers for new updates from your main system manufactures for New Display Drivers and any Third party software vendors of programs that you have installed.     hello, thanks for the help

    but when i ran slmgr.vbs /dli that was my windows script host i followed everything but i couldn't resolve the problem

    i didn't upgrade i just install it

    please help.
