Windows 8.1 Update is not appearing in the Windows Store

If you do not see the Windows 8.1 update in the Windows Store, here are some of the reasons. You can find more details here on why you may not be seeing the Windows 8.1 update.

You may be running an edition of Windows 8 that doesn’t support the update from the Store.

a. If you’re running Windows 8.1 Preview, here’s how to update to the final version.

b. If you’re running Windows Enterprise Edition or Volume License version of Windows Pro. You must speak to your system administer to learn how to update.

If you are not sure, the following steps will help you identify if you have a Volume License version of Windows:

Open the run dialog box by using the Windows Key + R
Type the following and press enter slmgr.vbs /dli
You will see a window titled Windows Script Host.
On the first line you should see either “RETAIL channel” or “Volume Channel”

If it says something that resembles Volume, you won’t be able to get it through the store and will need to talk to your system administrator about their plans for rolling out this update based on the Volume License agreement through the

Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC). If you are the system administrator or the person responsible for your company’s computers, you should refer to this article for information on how to upgrade.

c. If you’re using a Multiple Activation Product Key through a Commercial or MSDN contact. To install the update, you need to use media obtained through those programs.

You have not installed all pending Windows Updates. You can find details here on which update is needed to see the Windows 8.1 update.

You need to sync your App License; you can do this by:

On the Start screen, tap or click Store to open the Windows Store.
Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

Tap or click App updates
Tap or click Sync licenses

The Windows Store Catalog is not refreshing correctly.

To refresh the catalog, try pressing the Windows and R key together to open the run box, type WSReset.exe and hit Enter. Reboot and check the Windows Store again.

If you are reading this, DO NOT UPGRADE to 8.1. Microsoft will force you to adopt a Microsoft account login as the login for your machine in order to complete the 8.1 upgrade. It will also attempt to force you to do this if you attempt to download anything from the Microsoft store after upgrading to 8.1. It's a Microsoft Account or the highway, apparently, if you are contemplating upgrading to 8.1, Spare yourself the pain and don't upgrade, it is not worth the hassles and pain you are about to inflict on yourself if you don't feel like routing all your computer's activities through a Microsoft account....

It is truly unbelievable that Microsoft could screw up this big after Windows 8, but there you go...

I'm 5 hours into the upgrade process right now. I started yesterday and did have to create an account after which I received a msg that I had to wait 2 days to start the upgrade. When I tried tonight, I first used WSReset.exe, did a reboot signed into my account and did find the W8.1 download but had to to retry it many times before it finally did begin the download which took about 3 hours.Then I had to restart and after over 45 minutes, it's still not finished. Based on everyone elses posts, I'm not so bad off. I hope all this effort pays off in a useable upgrade result. I bought my current computer with W8 but never een tried to use it until this install provess. The accept license option as just popped up so bye for now and good luck you all.

After trying all these things to no avail, I finally did something that I always exhaust all other possibilities before I do it, called Microsoft Support.

(Note that I had already solved my "Not appearing in the Store" problem but the abort at 50% problem persisted.)

After two escalations (again -- this was my second perfectly functional, up-to-date, properly configured, and uninfested with malware machine I had to go this route for), the Tech threw up his hands and downloaded to me an .iso file and key, and that installed easily and straightforwardly and everything works now beautifully. And now I have a distribution disk, too, and I like that.

The high-level tech explained to me that the install files are too large to be delivered over the Update channel. He did not have an answer as to why the .iso file was not made generally available, though.

Great product. Unbelievably lousy delivery. Good telephone support.

I do not see a legitimate problem with having a Microsoft account. Perhaps paranoia strikes deep these days, but it seems neither to be an inconvenience nor any kind of breach or danger. It doesn't give them any access to your files, but I do NOT use their "recommended" cloud services, which would.
