Windows 8.1 Update is not appearing in the Windows Store

If you do not see the Windows 8.1 update in the Windows Store, here are some of the reasons.  You can find more details here on why you may not be seeing the Windows 8.1 update.

  1.  You may be running an edition of Windows 8 that doesn’t support the update from the Store.

   a. If you’re running Windows 8.1 Preview, here’s how to update to the final version.

   b. If you’re running Windows Enterprise Edition or Volume License version of Windows Pro.  You must speak to your system administer to learn how to update. 

If you are not sure, the following steps will help you identify if you have a Volume License version of Windows:

  • Open the run dialog box by using the Windows Key + R
  • Type the following and press enter   slmgr.vbs /dli
  • You will see a window titled Windows Script Host.
  • On the first line you should see either “RETAIL channel” or “Volume Channel”

If it says something that resembles Volume, you won’t be able to get it through the store and will need to talk to your system administrator about their plans for rolling out this update based on the Volume License agreement through the

Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC).  If you are the system administrator or the person responsible for your company’s computers, you should refer to this article for information on how to upgrade. 

  c. If you’re using a Multiple Activation Product Key through a Commercial or MSDN contact.   To install the update, you need to use media obtained through those programs.

  1. You have not installed all pending Windows Updates.  You can find details here on which update is needed to see the Windows 8.1 update.

You may also attempt an automated fix by running the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. You need to sync your App License; you can do this by:
  • On the Start screen, tap or click Store to open the Windows Store.
  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

  • Tap or click App updates
  • Tap or click Sync licenses
  1. The Windows Store Catalog is not refreshing correctly. 

To refresh the catalog, try pressing the Windows and R key together to open the run box, type WSReset.exe and hit Enter.  Reboot and check the Windows Store again.

Microsoft has released a troubleshooter to help find problems that may prevent you from updating to Windows 8.1.

    ok well  it is great you are getting closer.   I would recommend that you create a new thread in the Store topic.   I think you will get more expertise on that issue that way.        To be clear though if you have downloaded 8.1 you won't see it in the Store.

    I get new pc with windows 8 installed on it

    Hi Sunny,

    Did you get any kind of documentation with your PC on what Windows license you got with it.   Normally if you are an individual purchasing a PC they would not have sold you Mulitiple Licenses (eg Volume Licences) they would have just sold you one.     It may be that the person setting up your computer installed something that was different than what you purchased.

    Windows 8.1 Update is not appearing in the Windows Store

    We have retail version of win 8.0 x64

    Unable to install KB2871389

    KB2802618 installed 15 times and failed twice

    Cant find any installed updates

    Does not find any new updates

    I followed the steps in the list and it was using WSReset.exe that fixed the issue for me.  While I'm glad to have the update visible now I am left wondering why I needed to use this just to the see the update that should have been seen automatically.

    BillFill, does having to use this point to some underlying problem with the windows store on my machine?
